SOUTH HAVEN.
South Haven is an incorporated village on the shore of lake Michigan, at the mouth of Black river, in South Haven township, Van Buren county. The mouth of the river affords an excellent harbor for shipping. South Haven is the western terminus of the K. & S. H. branch of the M. C. R. R., it being 39 miles west of Kalamazoo, and 183 from Detroit. It has a population of about 2,000. Its manufacturing interests comprise 2 saw mills, 2 planing mills, a flouring mill, a woodenware factory and a basket factory. Lumber, baskets and fruit are the leading items of shipment, the soil and climate of the vicinity particularly adapting it to the culture of apples, peaches and small fruits. An incorporated nursery association has re-

SOUTH WRIGHT.

Spring Lake is a flourishing incorporated village of 2,000 inhabitants, in the township of the same name, Ottawa county, on the point of land lying between Spring lake and Grand river. The D. & M. R. R. passes through it, by which it is 3 miles west to Grand Haven, 29 east to Grand Rapids, and 186 miles to Detroit. The country around is well adapted to fruit raising, and apples, peaches, pears, small fruits and lumber constitute the bulk of the shipments hence. A small village but a place of considera- ble commercial importance as the point of divergence from the railroad of all the travel and overland traffic of the lake shore coun- ties north of Saginaw bay-Iosco, Alcona, Alpena and Presque Isle. It is on the J. L. & S. R. R., 28 miles north of Bay City and on the middle branch of Pine river, 5 miles back from the shore of Saginaw bay. Popu- lation 300. It has Congregationalist and Methodist churches and a union school. Lumber, shingles, hoops and telegraph poles- are shipped. STANTON.
A flourishing incorporated village, the county seat of Montcalm county, and the northern terminus of the Stanton branch of the D. L. & L. M. R. R. It is 24 miles north of Ionia, 62 northwest of Lansing, and 147 from Detroit. Population 1,200 Stanton is situated in a heavy pine forest. It contains about half a dozen each of lum- ber and shingle mills, and ships very heavily of pine lumber and shingles and oak staves. The village also contains 2 planing mills, a foundry and machine shop, a bank, a week- ly newspaper, the Herald, and Baptist, Meth- odist and Congregational churches, etc. Set- tled Jan, 1, 1862, Levi Camburn being the first resident. Incorporated 1869. Express -American. Telegraph -- Atlantic & Paci- fic. Daniel M. Gardner, postmaster.
