WATERFORD.


A village on the F. & P. M. R. R., 2 miles north of Plymouth.

WATERLOO.


A place of 500 inhabitants, in Waterloo township, Jackson county, 20 miles northeast of the county seat, and 6 north of Francisco- ville, on the M. C. R. R. It is situated on the headwaters of the Portage river, which empties into the Grand river, 4 miles below Jackson, and is a very pleasant little busi- ness place of about 100 inhabitants, all lively and wide awake. The surrounding country is finely adapted to agricultural pur- poses, and is occupied by very intelligent and thrifty farmers, who have taken great pains to improve and beautify their farms, and have fine and commodious buildings and first-class roads. There are 2 fine flour- ing mills and 3 saw mills in the township, all driven by water power. There are many beautiful lakes, also, all of which are filled with all kinds of fresh water fish. The tim- ber is oak, principally. The village was platted and first settled by Patrick Hubbard, of Waterloo, in 1836. There are 3 neat churches in the village, and 4 others in the township. A village on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 41 miles above New Buffalo and 20 below Grand Junction, in Berrien county. It is on the Paw Paw river, which furnishes water power, and is in the midst of a good agricultural region, which produces grain, apples, grapes and pears. A village of from 300 to 350 inhabitants, in Juniata township, Tuscola county, 22 miles east of Saginaw and 8 miles southwest of Caro. A plank road connects it with the former place. It is in an undulating timbered country. It contains a foundry and a saw and grist mill. It ships farm produce, staves, hoops, etc. Reese, on the D. & B. C. R. R., 21 miles south of Grand Rapids and 27 north of Kalamazoo. It has about 700 inhabitants. WAYNE,


The fourth station west of_Detroit on the M. C. R. R., is a flourishing village of 1,070 inhabitants, in Nankin township, Wayne county. It is also a station on the F. & P.


M. R. R., by which it is 51 miles north of Toledo and 104 south of Bay City. It was settled about 1836, and was incorporated as a village in 1870. Its manufactures consist of a lumber and heading mill, a foundry and machine shop, a flouring mill and a brick yard. It has four churches-Universalist, Congregationalist, Catholic, Methodist-a fine union school building, erected at a cost of $21,000, and a Masonic lodge. The Wayne county insane asylum, poor house and farm are also, located pear the village of Wayne. The place is surrounded by a good farming country, of which the principal pro- ducts are grain and potatoes. Express -- American ; Telegraph-Western Union. M. L. Barnard, postmaster.

WELLS.


A railway station on the J. L. & S. R. R., 40 miles above Wenona. Culver is its post- office.


WELLSVILLE.


A postoffice and railway station, in Lena- wee county, on the L. S. & M. S. R. R., 25 miles west of Monroe and 7 east of Adrian.


WENONA.


Wenona is an incorporated village of 2,600 inhabitants, in Bangor township, Bay county. It is on the left bank of the Saginaw river. immediately opposite Bay City, with which it is connected by a bridge. The J. L. & S. R. R. passes through it, via which it is 112 miles northeast of Jackson, and 15 miles north of Saginaw City. - It is also the eastern terminas of the Bay City, Midland & Grand Rapids railroad, now in course of construc- tion. The manufactures of Wenona are mainly lumber and salt, it boasting among its institutions, the largest saw mill in the State. There are some other manufactures however. It has 3 churches, Methodist, Congregation- al and Lutheran, a weekly newspaper, the Herald. Wenona is practically a suburb of Bay City. It was platted in 1864, and in- corporated in 1865. A village of 300 inhabitants in Westphalia township, Clinton county, 17 miles south- west of St John's, and 8 miles south of Fow- ler, on the D. & M. R. R. It is in a good farming country.
