ST. CLAIR.
The former county seat of St. Clair coun- ty, a beautifully located little city on the St. Clair river, at the mouth of Pine river, 12 miles below Port Huron. According to the census of 1874 it had a population of 2,003 .It is the eastern terminus of the C. & St. C. Air Line R. R., soon to be com- pleted westward to Pontiac, and ultimately to Chicago, serving as a feeder to the Can- ada Southern, which already extends east- ward from St. Clair to Buffalo.
The loss of the county seat a few years since, and the rapid growth of Port Huron,
its successful rival in the long contest for the honors of being the shire town, together with the natural decline of lumbering inter- ests, have somewhat dampened its former aspirations and materially checked its growth. The improvement of the agricul- tural interests surrounding the town, how- ever, and its railroad connections will, in part, if not fully, restore it in time to its former degree of prosperity. The old court house has been christened a city hall, and the old jail still serves the county in its former capacity. A fine union school house and five churches, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist and Catho- lic, constitute the other public buildings of the city.
The manufacturing interests of St. Clair include a large saw mill, a woolen mill, a large tannery, a shingle mill, 2 flouring mills, a foundry, an extensive carriage factory, and several brick yards. There is one national bank, and a weekly newspaper, the Republi- can.
St. Clair was laid out in 1828 by Thomas Palmer, of Detroit, and was for some years known as the village of Palmer. It was sub- sequently changed to St. Clair, and at one time promised to become a place of leading importance, its lumber business alone em- ploying 6 mills. The exhaustion of the pine accessible was the first blow to St. Clair's prosperity, which other circumstances have followed up.
It has a daily mail. Telegraph-Western Union. Express-Canadian. Robert H. Jenks, postmaster.

The village was platted in 1853, when the railroad was located, by a party of Detroit speculators who purchased the school section of Bingham township as a site, paying therefor $4 per acre. The railroad was completed to this point in 1857, when the county seat was established

ST. JOSEPH.
St. Joseph is, next to Niles, the most im- portant place in Berrien county. It is on the shore of lake Michigan, at the mouth of the St. Joseph river, and is the great center of the fruit trade of Western Michigan. It is on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 27 miles above New Buffalo, and 93 from Chicago by rail and 62 by lake. It claims a population of 3,400.
The village is situated on a peninsula formed by the lake and river, the surface of which forms a' plateau elevated 48 to 55 feet above the water level, rendering the location a peculiarly beautiful one. The public build- ings consist of 7 churches-one the Metho- dist Episcopal, being a very fine structure -- and a large union school. There are 2 first- rate hotels, several brick business blocks, and many elegant private residences. The principal item of manufacture is the article of fruit packages and baskets, the demand for which is immense. Two establishments are very extensively engaged in this business. Then there are a sash and door factory, a planing mili, a flouring mill, and several wagon and carriage factories. A small side- wheel steamer plies regularly between St. Joseph and Chicago, making daily trips. Numerous sail vessels also trade from this port. Fruit packages and baskets are shippd hence to all parts of the United States, be- sides which the exports include peaches. apples, cranberries, backberries, raspberries, etc.
The fruit region par excellence of Berrien county extends about 10 miles up and down the lake shore, and for 4 miles back into the country. Within this district small fruits never fail, and are grown in immense quan- tities. The peculiar location of this region, in its relation to the lake, adapts it also especially to peach culture. The tempera- ture here never falls below 3º or 4º Fah. below zero, while peach buds will stand several degrees severer cold.
The modern village of St. Joseph was first settled in 1829, Calvin Brittain and Augus- tus B. Newell building the first houses, though French Jessuit missionaries had oc- cupied the location more than a century be- fore. The village was laid out in 1831, and incorporated in 1834. It was at first called Newburyport. In 1836 the harbor piers were commenced. The Detroit & St. Joseph, now the Michigan Central, was chartered in 1831, and St. Joseph was its intended terminus till

after its sale by the State to the present com- pany in 1846, at which time it was completed only to Kalamazoo, when it was deflected southward to Niles and New Buffalo, proving a great detriment to St. Joseph. From this backset the place has been slowly but steadily recovering.
St. Joseph has a national bank, capital $100,000, and 2 newspapers -- the Herald & Traveler and Republican. "Express -- Ameri- can. Telegraph-Western Union. Charles Stewart, postmaster.
