action. The Central railroad was completed to Marshall in 1844, and the village was in- corporated a city in 1859. Its present popu- Iation, according to the census of 1874, is 4,623.

There are 10 churches in Marshall : Christian, Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist. Presbyterian, Congregational, Evangelical Association, Lutheran Catholic and African Methodist. There is also a Spiritual associa-, tion. In 1873 the Presbyterians erected a $60,000 church edifice. The public schools comprise a $60,000 central building-one of the finest in the State-and 4 ward schools. There are over 1,300 scholars enrolled, and 20 teachers employed at an aggregate of $8,500 for salaries.

In 1874 the county erected here a new court house, one of the finest in central Michi- gan. Its cost was over $50,000.

The manufacturing enterprises of Marshall include 5 Aouring mills, a paper mill, a wind- mill and pump factory, a hoe factory, (capi- tal $100,000), 2 planing mills, a foundry, 2 59

machine shops, etc., etc. There are 3 banks, the First National, capital $200,000; the Na- tional Bank of Michigan, capital $100,000 ; and the National City Bank, capital $100,- 000.

Two live newspapers are published here, the Statesman, republican, and the Exposi- tor, liberal. The city is lighted with gas. The fire department consists of a steamer and two hand engines, supplied with water from 22 artesian wells, located in different parts of the city.

Marshall has long been an important sta- tion on the M. C. R. R. It is the dinner station of the road where all day trains stop twenty minutes for meals. The Coldwater, Marshall & Mackinac railroad is graded from Coldwater through Marshall to Elm Hall, a distance of 110 miles, and bonds to the amount of $2,000,000 have been issued and are now (1875) being negotiated for the iron and rolling stock which will be put on carly in the year 1875. The Michigan & Ohio railway extends from Grand Haven to Ports-

mouth, on the Ohio river, a distance of 400 miles, also passes through Marshall. Work is rapidly progressing on this road and it is expected to be completed early in 1875, when Marshall will no longer lack the ad- vantages of being a railroad center. Indeed it seems safe to say that with its three com- peting roads added to its many other ad- vantages, Marshall is likely to become a place of leading importance in the interior of the State.
