OWOSSO.

Owosso is a city having a population of 2,448 inhabitants (according to the census of 1874) in Shiawassee county, a little to the northwest of the geographical center. It is on the D. & M. R. R., at the intersection of the J. L. & S. R. R., and is 78 miles from Detroit, 3 west of Corunna, the county seat, 79 east of Grand Rapids, 28 northeast of Lansing, and 36 southwest of Saginaw. The Saginaw river flows through the place, and furnishes a moderate water power. The first settlement was made here in 1835, when the village was laid out. The next year a colony from Rochester, N. Y., moved in, improved the water power, and estab- lished slack water navigation with Saginaw. The D. & M. R. R. was completed to Owosso in 1855, and the road to Lansing in 1863. Owosso is now looking forward to the construction of a third railroad, the Owosso & Northwestern, striking for some

point on the shore of lake Michigan north of any existing east-and-west roads.

Owosso contains Congregational, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, German Methodist and Catholic churches, first-class school accom- modations, a library association, 3 newspa- pers, the Northern Granger, the Press, and the Crusader, a mineral spring, 2 flouring mills, 2 foundries, 2 planing mills, I chair factory and several other manufactories of various sorts, more or less extensive, also 2 grain elevators, and numerous elegant pri- vate residences. PARMA.

The village of Parma is a place of about 1,000 souls, located in Jackson county, on the main line of the M. C. R. R., 10 miles west of Jackson and 87 miles from Detroit. Its close proximity to Jackson prevents a very rapid growth, notwithstanding it has some very fine brick stores and pleasant resi- dences. In the absence of water power its entire manufacturing interests are operated with steam, and consist of a planing mill, a foundry, an Alden drying establishment, and an extensive cooper shop. The large flour- ing mill of O. Gillett & Sons, which was blown up in 1874, has been repaired, and is doing a thriving business. An extensive business is done here in the purchase and shipment of fruit. The public buildings consist of a $20,000 union school building, to which is attracted a large number of for- eign pupils, and three churches-Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian-the former a $10,000 brick edifice.
