A postoffice in Livonia township, Wayne county, 3 miles east of Plymouth, and 2 south of Livonia station, on the D. L. & L. M. R. R. It is situated in a region.of good arable lands, the chief products of which are wheat, corn; oats, potatoes and buckwheat. Cider and vinegar are largely manufactured. Nan kin has a daily mail. B. C. NAPOLEON.
A thrifty little village on the Jackson branch of the L. S. & M. S. R. R., in the township of Napoleon, Jackson county. It is 10 miles southeast of Jackson, and the same distance west of Manchester, the crossing of the D. H. & I. R. R. It has a population of 500, or thereabouts, has Baptist, Methodist, Epis- copal, Congregational and Free Methodist churches, and a good $6,000 union school. The village is pleasantly located, but is too much scattered to show to advantage. The business interests of Napoleon include a planing mill, a grain-cradle factory, a cooper shop, and a cider mill. NASHVILLE.
The village of Nashville is a sprightly little village of nearly 1,000 inhabitants, sit- uated on the G. R. V. R. R., 45 miles east of Grand Rapids, and 50 northwest of Jack- son. It is in Castleton township, Barry county, and its existence dates only from the completion of the railroad to this point. The Thornapple river affords a moderate water power. The manufacturing enterprises of Nashville include a flouring mill, a carding mill, a saw mill, a stave mill, a foundry, and a brick yard. An additional flouring mill is to be erected this year (1875). There are but 2 churches, Methodist and Christian. A weekly newspaper, the News (independent), is also published here. The projected Michi- gan & Ohio Railroad, connecting Grand Haven with Columbus, O., will make Nashville a point. Lumber, heading stock and farm produce are shipped from this station. NEGAUNEE.
Negaunee is a flourishing city in the heart of the iron district of Marquette county. It is intersected by both the C. & N. W. R. R. and the M. H. & O R. R., and is 62 miles northwest of Escanaba, 12 west of Marquette and 3 east of Ishpeming. There are a num- ber of mines located immediately in the city some of the producture of which are as fol- lows :

Other mines were not worked in 1874. The Pioneer furnace is also located at Ne- gaunee. It has two stacks and turned out in 1874, 11,OSo tons of pig iron, valued at $310,240. The city has a population of 3,741. It has Episcopal, Methodist and Catholic churches, ample school accommo- dations, a weekly paper-The Iron Herald, 2 banks and all the other accessories of a live business center. NEWAYGO.
Newaygo is the county seat of Newaygo county, a thriving village of 1,400 inhabi- tants in the township of Brooks. It is the present northern terminus of the G. R. N. & L. S. R. R., being 36 miles north of Grand Rapids. It is also on the Muskegon river, 30 miles above Muskegon, which here furnishes immense water power, and this makes Newaygo an important lumber manufacturing point. One mill here ranks among the largest in the west, having a capacity for 20,000,000 feet per annum. There is also another smaller mill, 3 shingle mills, a sash and blind factory, and a large flouring mill. All are run By water power. The village also contains two hotels, a $7,000 school house, 2 churches, Methodist and Congrega- tional, etc. Newaygo derives its name from an Indian word signifying "much water." It was incorporated in 1867, and was reached by the railroad in 1872. E. O. Shaw, postmaster.
