Each issue of the Announcement will be carefully prepared with reter- ence to the needs of the church and ts members. We hope to make it more attractive than ever. New tea- tures will be added from time to time, which cannot fail to be of interest to you all.
In order to increase the circulation of the Announcement we offer it from now until the close of the year for ten cents. We should have at least two hundred new subscribers. Any one bringing us ten new subscribers will receive a premium worthy the effort.
HOLY WATER. The disciples of Christ have otten been accused of preaching and practicing water salva- tion, but we never vet have given to "mere water" such prominence as to think that one drop from the Jordan would answer our Lord's command to be burried in baptism. Perhaps our friend and contemporary, Rev. Dr. Leeper, has concluded that the "holli- ness"of Jordan water will take the place of the "muchness" required tor N. T. baptism. We doubt if such a con- clusion could be substantiated by ref- erence to the Scriptures.
THE CAUSE OF Division in the DIVISION. church of Chust is not the result of a sincere desire to know and follow the teachings of the Scriptures. This invariably tends to- ward union. We are divided over our own speculations and theories. The world has never been satisfied with the wisdom of God, but we have gone about to establish our own wisdom. The Bible tells us of a God who re- vealed himself to the world in the person of His Son Jesus Christ, who, when He left this world, sent the Holy Spint as the Comforter to abide in the hearts of His tollowers. But we have never been satisfied with what God has chosen to tell us ot these three, and so have been trying to determine their relation to each other by our wisdom, and over our specula- tions are divided into Unitarian and Trinitarian sects. The Bible knows nothing of these terms, and therefore can not be responsible for such division, nor is it for the many other divisions which exist in the ranks ot His followers. Oh that we might some day learn to be content with what God has chosen to reveal and trust Him implicitly. Then would we re- alize the unity for which Christ prayed.

How about the Wednesday evening prayer meeting?
Do you remain away from prayer meeting because you think you do not need it or that it does not need you? Neither is true.
"Attending services is like bicycle riding or any physical exercise. li you do not attend regularly it makes you sore when you do. Regularity makes it a pleasure."
A large percentage of our people are absolutely disloyal to our services. They stay away when they could come as well as not. Such should not be the case.
If the above remarks hit you, con- sider who is to blame for it. If you were doing your full duty would they then disturb your conscience? If not, do you not think you ought to be disturbed?
We want you to notice especially the Special Announcements. You should at least be informed of our Services even if you cannot attend. Perhaps a glance may quicken your interest and arouse in you a desire for the Lord's House.
FAITHFUL The importance of CONTINUANCE. anight beginning can never be overestimated, but the beginning, however good, will not sutlice. Everywhere we are taught the necessity of a faithful confiance in order to obtain the reward. At baptism we sometimes sing " Lis done, the great transaction's gone." This may be true in a sense, but in a truer sense it's only begun and Heaven de- pends upon the course of our lives after baptism even more than upon the baptism itself. Christianity is more than a profession, it is a life and the more nearly we conform our lives to the perfect Model the more sure we may be of the great reward.
Come to Church Tomorrow.
A NEW ORDER OF It this world PREACHERS. is brought to Christ in the near futine we shall have to develop a new order of preachers The present methods are inadequate. The comparatively few men who have been styled "the clergy" will have to yield some of the prerog- atives of the official dignity and grant the right of all believers to "preach the word" even as they did in the beginning. Our Sunday Schools and Endeavour Societies should be- come more and more training schools for personal evangelistic etfint. Young people should be taught the art of soul winning.
Then will the church of the future be an evangelistic church with all its members evangelists in the trite sense. O that we might be hungry for souls and know how to win them.

Suppose I were the only Christian in this world. At my present rate of interest and effort, how long would it be until there would be another?
I am the only Christian in the world to whom God has appointed my work. If i fail to do it, it must forever remain undone. Grant me, dear Lord, strength and inclination to do the work Thou hast committed un- to me.

We have been wondering by what process of reasoning good people con- clude that it is all right to go to the the: tre at the park, and all wrong to go to the temple to the same or better class of show. Some one suggested that the park theatre isfree. Wonder if this is the reason.
PASTORAL LETTER.
FORT WAYNE, IND , SEPT. 1898, DEAR BRETHREN'
In looking over some old papers the other day I came across a copy of a letter which Iaddressed to each of you in September af 1895 I called up many precious memories and led me to resolve upon myother letter to you, at Uns time. which I trust will be carefully read and its contents seriously pondered.
There are a number of matters which demand our attention, and I am sure they need only to be mentioned to arouse your hearty interest and call fourth your quick response.
First of all let me remind you of the intimate relationship which must ever exist between the true pastor and his people. It is described in the New Tes- lament in the very suggestive similitude of shepherd and sheep. We, in this country, can hardly realize the full sig- niticance of this figure, for such shejr herding as Jesus refered to is not often sven except in the East The tenderness of the tie, however is easily seen in the hymn so greatly loved and so often sung "There were ninety and nine that safely ly in the shelter of the fold But one was out on the Bellsastray. far off from the streets of gold. "
The Savior is designated as The Great Shepherd and His command to the under shepherds is to "feed the flock of God." The love and care which the shepherd should manifest for the flock is to be reciprocated by the flock and therefore the tenderness of their mutual care is readily understood.
Need I say to you, my brethren, that there is no fonder ambition of my life thân in be a True 'pastor, a shepherd of the lock, in all that the term implies. I am sure too' that you will not mistake my motive when Iappeal to you for such loyal following and earnest support as the intimacy of our relationship as pastor and people demands. I am deeply grate- ful to you for the patience and the mani- fold courtesies you so freely extend and my rarnest prayer is that these all may work out to our mutual good and to the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Much. very much depends upon "The tie that binds our hearts in Christian love." May it grow stronger and firmer with each passing day until we shall realize
