This takes off from our list of credi- tors six, names, since we have paid them in full. It about . squares up back interest on our mortgage loan at the Tri-State, and reduces a num- ber of other bills. Surely. this is en- couraging.

But there is another list. We must pay the following bills at once and yet we have no money with which lo pay them. To the Seat Company $125.00. To the Furnace Company as much or more, and something to the Organ Company, and a few other smaller bills. The amount needed is not less than $400.00. We have part of this promised but not nearly all of it. Who will help us? Only about one hundred people as yet have paid annual dues. Surely another hundred of our people can do as much as that at once. This is not a hardship certainly and will relieve the church greatly.

THE BICYCLE EXCURSION.

One of the most enjoyable occa- sions we have ever attended was the bicycle excursion which occured last Monday evening. About forty of our young people went out to Bro. McMackens and enjoyed their splen- did hospitality tor several hours and came home refreshed and happy.

The young people were in good spirits that evening and mingled freely in the innocent sports which were suggested. Brother and Sister McMacken proved themselves to be splendid hosts. They gave to us the freedom of the farm and set for us a magniticant spread of berries and good pure Jersey cream and several varieties of cake. A tew little acci- dents occured but no bones were broken and all bruises are healed. It was an occasion long to be remem- bered.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC.

Today we are to have a picnic at Swinney Park. Did you know that? It you did not you do now. We will meet at the park at one o'clock and have a good time if we want to. Bring your baskets with you, with some good things to eat in them and we will have a spread that will make your eyes water. We want all the little folks to come and we want the big tolks to come too. Let us all frolic together for a halt day. It will do us good.

The pastor has been promised $100 on back salary before he leaves.

PASTOR'S LETTER.

Dear Brethren :- In the letter of last week one or two slight errors oc- cured which I wish to correct. The location of the University is on the South Side, not in South Chicago, as stated in last weeks issue. The lat- ter place is at least ten miles further south. The buildings of the Uni- versity are built after a modified style of Greek architecture. These mistakes were doubtless due to the hasty writing of the manuscript.

There are so many things of which I should like to speak and so very little space which I can occupy that ! hardly know what to say. Perhaps a little account of how I am spending my time would be of interest. We usually rise about 6 o'clock and af- ter making our toilet we spend a half hour in reading the Greek N. T. Bro. Hall guides us in this. At present

we are reading the Epodle to the Romans and we enjoy it very much indeed After this we go to breakfast about your blocks distant and return in time to attend Pres Harper's lec- ture at 8:30 This course of lectures deals with the Wisdom Literature of the O. T. From 930 to 11 we have to spend in preparation of assigned work of in reading and if we care to do so attend the chapel service the Last half hour. At eleven each day Prof. Geo. Adam Smith, of Scotland, lectures on the origin of the Hebrew Religion. This is a must helpful course and is being tollowed with great interest by a large class. We do not take dinner until five o'clock or a little later, so from noon until two o'clock we have to copy notes, read, oni use the time for whatever purpose we may choose. At two we listen to a lecture by Prot. Willett. and at three we attend the class con- ducted by Prof. Burton, one of the leading instructors in New Testament Literature and teaching in the world. We count his work the most proti- table we are doing. As I have said at tive we go to dinner and follow that with a ramble in the surrounding puks. The evening is spent in re- vie xing the things we have heard dur- ing the day and in making whatever preparation is needed for the follow- lowing day. This is the program with slight varyations for four days

The great Jubilee Convention ot our people is approaching. It will be held in Cincinnati, beginning October the fourteenth and la t over the nine- teenth. We should by all means get a crowd hom Fort Wayne and go. It will mark an spach in the history of man people. PASTOR'S LETTER.

Dear Brethren :- My di emption of the Art Institute in last weeks issue was so very meagre that I am tempted to write another letter on the same subject but will torbear

The public library, only a little distance from the Art institute, I a place of supreme interest to every in- telligent person The building is one of the finest I have ever visited. The interior is finished in white marble and presents a must enchant- ing appearance. But the building it- self is of least interest when one con- siders the wealth of information stored away in the various depart- ments of the library itself. Of course I only had the most hurried view of a few things but enough to convince me that if one only knew how 10 find it, there is almost nothing in the way of knowledge that is beyond his reach. It is a liberal education in it- self to know how to use with a good degree of efficiency the information placed at ones disposal.

I was struck paniculadly wah the class of persons Isaw in the hla and reading room. The mapaanity we're men in the oldmary walk of life. Many of them were Itruns revealing in their general appearance the resultset hund, home tion! Wird blessing to such as there, the well framework of wells, that such splendid ady uitges should be placed it then disporal.

On lit Satinday I made the mup In Milwaukee on the Steamer Chin- topher Columbus, and remained over Lord's Day with Tho F. N Calvin. pastor of the church there. I found there a small church of about one hundred and fitty members worship- ing in an old name house. Yet there people pay $1200 per year to then pastor and contribute from slut to SSO0 annually to missions. They are arranging to buiki a new line of worship. 1 bad the pleasure of preaching to them both morning and evening, and returned on the steamer Virginia on Monday. It was a de- lightful tuip without even a tendency to seasickness.

Bro. Haws, the great singer, an old acquaintance is here with his w.de, who is in one of our hospitals taking treatment. We are very sorry for him and his wife and hope her a speedy recovery.

Bros. Carr and Kein were among us this week looking atter students tor Butler Bible College. They re- purt success and expect several stu- dents from here for next year. They lett for Hartford City, Ind., on Wed- nesday.

"THE WORLD BEAUTIFUL."

Miss Lillian Whiting is one of the most beautitul writers of this, the closing of the nineteenth century. She is in perfect harmony with the spirit of this age. She has well named her series of essays placed in three volumes which she calls the "The World Beautiful." It is not hei aim to criticize the present statues of affairs nor does she do this, but places a great picture of ideals before ones mind's eye which carries the reader into a higher plane of thinking thus praves the way for higher living. Her first essay is on "The Duty of Happiness," which 1 will quote from in this article and try and show the beauty of it. "Our World Beautiful does not depend on external scenery, on things outside of our control, but is "like the kingdom of heaven, it is not a locality, but a condition." If we live in the sweet, sunny atmos- phere of serenity and light and ex- ultation" thus creating in ourselves a happy exilerating disposition the
