would about us will be beautiful and everything will be sweeter and brighter than they would beint we took the pessanistic view of hte. Happiness Should be saught, for it "is a very beautiful thing, the most beautiful and heavenly thing in the world, but it is a result, a spiritual condition and not predetermined by a bank ac- count or by the flattering increase of praise." So place vom spiritual na- ture on the throne and 'et it rule your body and worldly possessions if voll would enjoy this World Beautiful in which you live.
The central ideal upon which she builds the first essay is a quotation hom a pret which is: "Be thou the true man thou dost seck." She com. ments upon it thus: "lt one ad mires the patience, gentleness, sweet- ness and unfailing energy of another; il he finds himself renewed, invigor- orated and inspired by such contact -- why does he not himself su live that he may bring the same renewal and inspiration to others?" Such a seed planted in the hearts of Christians would work out miracle's in one gen- eration. This is inspiring but is only one step to the grand climax to which une is led by following her thought through the book.
She closes this first part by a very beautiful quotation which it might be well it we would place it m om beart as a principle of our lives. "Do thy duty, that is best, Give unto thy God the rest."

The Church of Chist at Ada, O., of which Prof. Wm. I. Adams his recently been called as pastor, is in many respects a very remarkable one. One class in Lord's Day School has over tour hundred members and this school is large and successful other- wise. They have a beautiful church building with auditorium to seat an immense crowd. The church prop- erty is without debt. Audiences with them are never lacking as the Ohio Normal University there located, has over thirteen hundred students. This being a college town very little pas- tomate work is required during the week, thus giving Prot. Adams time for teaching in elocutionary lines and work in entertainment field. We are glad to hear that Prot. Adams will be with us nearly all of the first week in September to lecture at the Teacher's Institute.
Bro. Chas. Yagerlehner and wite left for Chicago this week without much hope of returning. We will miss them very much as they were regular and faithtul workers in the church. He has been with us tor nine years and his wite shortly after their marriage. Our prayers go with them.

PASTOR'S LETTER.
Dear Brethren :- There are a dozen different things crowding for utter- ance this week, and it is hard to choose between them. Perhaps a word about a number of things will prove inter- esting.
On last Saturday in company with about one hundred students I visited the Hull House. This, as you know, is the social settlement presided over by Miss Jane Adams. It is located m one of the down town districts and aims to furnish a place of relief from the low plain of common life with which it is surrounded, space forbids speaking in detail of the various ministries performed in connection with the house, but ! gladly add my testimony to the great number who recognize in it a feature of Christian enterprise too long neglected, that of seeking to improve the surroundings of the less fortunate classes of society. We may have more to say ut this work at a later time.
We spent Lord's Day on the North Side with some old friends and at-
tended services at the North Side church, of which W. B. Lolor is pastor. The wink there is hopetul. Ireturned to the University, however, in time to go to a large Baptist church in the evening to hear Rey. Comtland Myersol Brooklyn. I was only med- etately pleased with the sermon.
On Monday morning I received a call hom Bro. Walker and Bro, San- ford Rich and in the afternoon of the same day visited the Field Columbian Museum. This is located in Jackson Park. The bankhing is the fine art building of the World's Fair. It is a massive structure, the only one lett of those which composed the famous White City. Within it is a most magnificant collection of World's Fair relies, by far too numerous to mention. I spent the entire afternoon there and only glanced at compara- lively a few things. One could prob- ably spend, with proper preliminary instructions, even months in caretul study of this immense collection of stich variety of specimens.
On Tuesday evening I took dinner with Bio. Rich. He lives about twelves blocks south of the Univer- sity in a very pleasant cottage in a pleasant locality. 1 shall not soon lurget the kind hospitality extended to me by both brother and sister Rich. Betore you read this I shall have left the University and joined my family in Ohio.
I wish now to express my very great gratitude to the church for granting me this season of rest and refreshing. It has been to me an ex- perience which I am sme will prove profitable to me in the great work to which my life is connected.
Sister Bessie Rich has semmined to the city to reside permanently.

NOTES FROM YOUR PASTOR.
Our vacation is nearly at an end and we are gladly looking homeward.
we shall leave our Ohis Mends next Monday, and it the weather is pleasant shall go by way of the lake to Detroit and Angola, Stopping a Jew days at the latter place with Bre. and Sister Medbin, and aniving home Ang. 31st or Sept. 1st.
We spent Tuesday Aus, 22nd in Cleveland visiting old friends and looking up some matter of interest in the Public Library. The hivary building in Cleveland is a very modest one hint we were impressed with the arrangement of books and intotma- tion matenal. Everything is en- tirely accessable and in easy reach.
Bio. Yagerlehner was called back from Chicago to the funeral of his fatherinlaw. We me story for him for the cause that brought him back but it certainly was a treat to see his earnest and joyful tace again.

OUR TRIP HOME.
The trip from Ohio to Fort Wayne is not a long one but with om three little ones it is not likely to be a very pleasant one especially this time of the year when the weather is warm and the trains are likely to be crowded. These considerations with others, led us to decide upon a lake trip, as far as we could come. Accordingly bidding goodby to our friends in Ohio, on Tuesday morning we went to Cleve- land and took the steamer "City of Cleveland" for Detroit. The day was clear and beautiful and the water was quiet, as smooth as we ever saw it and we made the journey on schedule time, without the usual discomfitures of travel, and felt refreshed and rested at the close. One of the happy fca- tures or the trip was the meeting with Bro. G. L. Wharton, one of our mis- sionaries to India, who is residing temporarily with his family at De. troit. He had been to Hiram and was returning so we enjoyed his iel-
lowship all day and we count it a rare and rich Providence that gave us this pleasure.
Landing in Detroit about five o'clock We took the electric line for Ypsilanti where we spent the night very com. furtably indeed, and at 9:25 the next morning we took the tham for His- dale, where we waited at noon long enough to see a little of this beautiful college town and cat our lunch. At 1:05 we again took the nam and m about an hour landed at Angola, where we me now enjoying the rich fellowship of the Christian home of Bro. and Sister Medbunny We are expecting to finish our journey to- monow (Enday ) morning and shall be glad indeed again to meet and gieet those with whom we have li- bored for so many years in the (I). pel.
We are all usually well and feel re- fleshed in body and mind, and hope- ful for the future. Itwill be a matter of great cheer and encouragement it we shall be greeted on the Lord's bay by a multitude of our friends and brethren and we shall endeavor to de- liver a message as helpful and inspir- ing as the occasion of our home com- ing may call fourth. May the bless- ing of the Lord attend om future la- bois, and may his grace be upon us all.
Is we write we remember the pic- nic and wish that we could be present but our choice lay between fulfilling our promise to Bio. Medbury to pay him a visit and being at the picnic. It was not an easy matter to decide but at best we would not have been at the picnic much before night and so decided to forego the pleasure
