IMPORTANT ITEMS. Come to church to-morrow.
The sermons to-morrow will be of very special interest. You should hear them both.
Do not fail to be at the reception and annual business meeting Monday evening. We have planned for a very pleasant occasion.
The reception will be held trom 7 to 8:30 p. m. Every member is ex- pected to shake hands with every other member in that time. Refresh- ments will be served free.
The reception is intended primarily to increase our acpuaintance with the new members of the church. They should all be present. All the old members should be present, also, to meet them. Let us have pleasant fel- lowship.
The ladies should attend the Aid Society meeting, Thursday afternoon. It will doubtless be a very interesting one, as many of the ladies have been raising money for the seat fund, and will report how they did it. Push the work along.
"I receive the Announcement, and thankfully, too. It has the right ring, the right spirit, and, withal, is hopeful. It ought to enjoy.500.sub- scribers."-Victor Dorris.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
Why do people regard it as neces- sary for the Gospel message to be sup plemented by some external Spirit in- fluence> Were not these things whit- ten that men might believe? Jno. xx-31. Are not the Scriptures able to make us wise unto salvation? Il ['m. 111:15-16. Why deny the word of the Spirit, and then claim to be tilled with the Spirit?
We would not lint the operations of the Holy Spirit, neither would we deny the potency of the word of the Gospel, especially when om Lord commanded us to "Go, preach the Gospel," and by the Apostle we ale told that the Gospel is God's power unto salvation to everyone that be- lieves it; and again, that inth comes by hearing, and heating by the word of God. This is all, the testimony of the Spirit. Why depend upon other influences or potencies when God has given us so good a sword and com- manded us to use it?
Let it be understood that Bro. 101. ris has not refused to debate with Mr. Mahin, as some seem to inter. It is a universal rule of debate that each disputant have a voice m the framing ot the propositions to be dis- . cussed. For some reason, Mr. Cissel seems to deny this right to Bio, Dor- ris, and insists that he athim a propo- sition which admits of bberal quib- bling, and which does not fairly set 10;th what Bio. Dortis teaches or what he believes the Scriptures teach. There can be but one reason for this and that is a desire to bluff and to get advantage. Such conduct is not only unmanly, but is cowardly in the ex- treme. If Mr. Cissel wants the truth presented in debate, why does he not submit to a fair statement of the questions involved? It he does not want it thus presented, why did he extend the challenge in the first place>

Your presence at church is helpful. We are glad to see the increased attendance at our regular services.
While our audiences are good there are yet many of our own people who do not attend. Are von one of the number?
Do not fail to patronize the enter- tainment next Tuesday evening. The Ladies' Aid Society have one-halt the advance sale of tickets.
If you sell ten tickets for the Marshall P. Wilder entertainment Tuesday evening you have done as much for the church as it you had given $1.25. Is it not worth your effort ?
FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
ROM. VI, 4 .- " Therefore we are burried with him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Does this indicate sprinkling or pouring? Does it not teach that the form has a very deep and spiritual significance?
ROM. VI; 5. . "For it we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness
of his resurrection." The figure is not hand to interpret. Jesus being dead was burried planted in the tomb; so we being dead to sin are (burried . planted in the baptismal waters, and being thus mited with him in his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.
BAPTISM AND UNION. "For JS many of you as have been baptized imo (Inist, have put on Christ." Gal. III; 27. "That they also may be one in ns." Jno. AVII, 21. This union is entitely personal. The person who has been baptized into Chist is one with the Father and the Son, and he is one also with every other person who has been so mited with Christ." Such persons ate Christians and re- main such until they choose to wear an- other name, which separates them by as much as the name signifies, at least. Besides, there is no other way into Christ but by baptism and it we fail here, substituting springling of pour- ing instead, we are not scripturally united to Chust and are therelote separated from each other.
Int: DEBATE. Mi. Dorris does not refuse to atimi Di. Mahin's first proposition because it is false, simply, but chiefly because it is absolutely me:mingless. Suppose Mr. Dorris should prove that "Christian baptism is a putting into and a taking out of Water." What has been gained> Absolutely nothing. In Mr. Cissel's last letter to Mr. Dortis he says, "We accept immersion as baptism." Why does he wam Mi. Dorris to affum in debate what he aheady accepts. Mi. Cissel further states that they stand ready to prove that spunkling and pouring are valid Christian bapusin .. if bor. Mathin will athirin that in debate Mr. Dorris will deny it and the debate will take place.

Last Lord's Day was a very dis- agreeable day, yet om audiences were fairly good.
THE BROTHERHOOD).
At a called meeting of the men ol the congregation last Monday evening an organization was effected, which will be known as The Brotherhood of the West Jefferson Street Church of Christ. The object of the Brotherhood is to "promote the mutual acquaint- ance and fellowship of the men of the church and congregation and to enlist the active cooperation of all in various lines Christian service." The consti- tution provides tor two classes of members, viz: Active and Associate. "All male members of the church are entitled to become active members." Men of good moral standing, who are not members of the church, may be- come associate members. There are no regular dues, but each member will be expected to contribute a small amount quarterly to defray the slight expenses incurred by The Brother- hood.
Fom departments were established regula features of the work. vi: the physical, the social, the intel- lectnal and the pmutual. Fach of these departments will be provided by a superintendant, who will appont to assist him not less than two others. The meetings of the Brother hood will be held on the second Tues- dav evening of each month. the character of the meetings will be vaned and something of interest will be pie- sented and discussed at each meeting. I wenty names were appended to the constitution as chute: members and it was voted to leave the Int open to receive chatter member until after the first meeting might which will be Tuesday evening. February Sth. Itis hoped that every man and boy in the church may become a member of the organization. After the meeting ad- journed the officers met und in de- condance with the constitution ap- pointed 1. A. Shepler as superintendant of the social department, and Dr. W. Is. Calvin as superintendant of the intellectual department.
We sincerely believe that this is a movement of great permanence and profit. Heretoture, while there have been numerous organizations of differ- ent character, yet there has been nothing in which the men could feel a peculiar and vital interest except the official board, and in the very nature of things we could not elect all our worthy men to a place on the bond.
