NEWS OF INTEREST TO ALL.

The money for Foreign Missions will not be sent away until after next Sunday. Let everybody contribute.

Do not fail to send in your envel- ope by next Sunday. Remember, "an offering, however small, from every member," is our motto.

We wish to urge attendance at our Sunday evening services. It is our purpose to make them evangelistic in characte, and we desire the enthusias- fic support of all.

Our prayer meeting was attended by a larger number Wednesday eve's, but still there is room. Let us keep Wednesday evening sacred tor this purpose and make it a service of joy and inspiration.

The Announcement has come to be well nigh indispensible as a means of communication to our people con- cerning matters of vital interest to all, and yet many are slow to respond with the small subscription price. We believe that you would not be willing to dispense with the paper but we shall have to do so it we do not receive many more paid subscriptions soon.

DISTRICT Ou semi-annual district CONVENTION. convention will be heki at Manon, Indiana, April 3, 4 and 5 The programs are nearly ready for print and will doubtless be mailed soon. The railroads have granted a two cent rate for these con. ventions throughout the state, and we trust that quite a goodly delegation from om church will be able to attend the one at Manon. Bro. C. f. Smith, Bro. Henry R. Pritchard and Bio. Jno. Pounds ale to appear on the program. These, together with others, who will speak will doubtles make the convention one of the profit and interes1.

RELIGION IN No one can even FT. WAYNE. casually study ie- ligious conditions m Fort Wayne and not be impressed with its strange complexity. There is scarcely a phase of religious thought but that is empathized here by followers. We will not now attempt to enumerate the various bodies calling themselves churches, but will suggest that we have m preparation a scimon of pet- haps a brief senes of sermons, setting fourth the mjury to religion itself and to morals as well, of this unchistian condition of Chunsiumity. After somewhat careful study of these con- ditions for a period of years, we are fully persuaded that the pubhe nuis- ances, in a moral sence, in our city are more or less directly traceable to the divided, unsympathetic, unhar- monious presentation of Christianity which the city affords. In the series ot sermons above refered to, it will be the aim not only to point out the conditions themselves but to show the injury they are working and to suggest a remedy.

ITEMS OF INTEREST TO ALL.

Do not forget the Sunday School.

The tea at Mrs. Balzers was quite well attended.

The mid-week prayer meeting should be faithtully attended.

Let the members of the Endeavor Society be awake to opportunities.

Our services last Lord's Day were especially inspiring and helpful but some failed to attend.

The bad weather has prevented quite a number from making their contributions to missions. Only about 200 people have responded. We should have as many more. Hand it in Sunday if possible.

There are some things which the people can do to make a service in- spiring and profitable, and one is simply to attend the service. Nothing is so inviting to strangers as a full house. If our members do not at- tend how can we expect others to do so. There is a tendency upon the part of some to neglect this simple duty.

OUR PLEA. We are sometimes

led to beheve that our own people do not halt appreciate the beauty and torce ot the simple plea which is made by the disciples of Christ. It is sadly surprising and surprisingly sad to witness the contusion which dwells in the minds of many good people regarding the way in which Christ is to be accepted. Not long ago we heard a sermon from a man of evi- dently good intentions on " The call of God." It consisted chiefly in an exhoration to come to Christ, but failed entirely to state what steps should be taken to come to him. We went away sad, and yet rejoice- ing that we were able not only to in- vite men to Christ but to point out to them the divinely ordered "way of salvation," and that we had the lib- erty to quote the very words of the Apostles in answer to the question "what must I do to be saved?" We wanted to say to those present that evening "It you want to come to Christ, believe on him with all your heart, repent of your former life, con- fess his name and be baptized, and you have the promise of the remiss- ion of sins and the gitt of the Holy Spirit." How concise, how direct, how simple is the answer, and ; et, how many rehgious teachers there are, who, because blinded by sectarian prejudicies, would fear to quote Acts 11- 38.

The bad weather has also inter- fered with our current expense col- lections thus far this month. We have bills due from this fund amount- ing to about $75.00 which will have to be paid next Monday. Let us hear from a great many next Sin- day, and remember that aunval dues should be paid this month.

RELIGION IN In accordance with FL. WAYNE. He promre of a week ago we shall preach nost Sun das evening of A practical vies of Religion m It. Wayne' We are more and more impressed with the necessity of a bold and unequivocal statement of the facts as they appear We believe that there are many good people in this city , and this is an est dence of the wonderful power of the Christ biniselt, who in spite of the hideous effects of sectionm . cull able to show fruit. We believe that denominationalim is entuch human and therefore unchristian, and that any apology for its long con'in- uance is wantonly disregardtul of our Lord's expressed desne, to say the least.

MISSIONARY FELDS AND FORCES.

The above heading is the title of one of the hand banksof the Bethany Reading Circle. Beginning next week we intend giving, m outline form, some facts regarding the organ- ization, history and present condition of ot vanous missionary societies, a. gathered from the various chapters in the book above related to. This will continue through several issues of the Announcement. We shall also give a summary of the work now being done, mentioning names and stations of om various missionaries. This can not but prove beneficial to all those who will take the time to read what is presented We would sing- gest also that it would be well to Ic- tain the various numbers containing these sketches for future reference.

Faith is the basis of righteousness. Heb. \1.6.

Christian faith is not belief in doc- trine but trust in a person. Acts XVI:31.

Man inevitably becomes like the object of his worship. It that he Christ he will become like him. Cor. 111:18. Col. HI. 1-11

When one fails to exhibit the char- acter of Christ the fault does not lie in the religion which he protesses, but in his profession of it.

It is not enough to say that we be- lieve in Christ and then put on a pious appearance. Christ must rule in our lives if we be truly his, and this cannot fail to produce the very highest type of morality, since Christ himself is pure.

An outward profession of religion is of no avail whatever in forming char- acter. It is the inward passion of the soul that fashions the deed. If that passion be evil it will result in sin, no difference what may be the profession. But an evil passion can- not abide where Christ is. Put Christ in the soul and all that is evil will be banished from it.

THE PART THE GAZETTE DID NOT PUBLISII. We were very grateful for the report of our last Sunday evening,s sermon which ap- peared in the Gazette, but we desire to add at least one thing which the reporter did not get. In connection with the paragraph which refered 10 the "unholy ambition of pretentious men," we said: "to such men we are indebted tor Roman Catholicism with all the abuses which have been prac- ticed under her reign of terror, and to such men also are we indebted for the arrested development of the reformat- tion of the sixteenth century. The retormation itself was headed toward Jerusalem, and sought to restore the ancient order, but at Augsburg a con- fession was formulated and the re- formation soon dwindled into Luth- eranism which is but little better than Romanism of any other ism."

DENOMINATIONALISM AND

EVANGELIZ ATION. Speaking of the harm of division to religion it- selt we said that it is the greatest pus- sible hinderance to successtul evange- lization, and stated that not even the saloon stood so much in the way of reaching men. By this we do not mean that the various protestant bodies, as individuals, are working greater injury to religion than the saloon. But we do mean to say that the fact of division stands as an almost insurmountable obstacle in the way of the evangelist. What is ac. complished is in spite of this obstacle. But if we were united and marching as one man against sm who or what could withstand us? Our Savior understood just what He was about when he prayed for unity "that the world may believe that thou didst send me."
