Some Harvelous Figures. The complexity of animal structure is marvelous. A caterpillar contains more than 2,000 muscles. In the human body are some 2,000,000 perspiration glands, communicating with the sur- fare by duets, having a total length of some ten miles; whilst that of the arteries, veins and capillaries must be very great: the blood contains millions of millions of corpuseles, each a struc- ture in itself; the rods in the retina. which are supposed to be the ultimate recipients of light, are estimated at 30,000,000. aud Meinert has calculated that the gray matter of the brain is built of st least 600,000,000 cells.

Life is hardly worth the living with the never-ceasing aches and pains of a bad back. If you would remove the burden of hackache, reach the cause-the kid- neys, Doan's Kidney Pills will cure sick kidneys, and the cure is lasting. Here is proof of it.
Mr. Israel A. Morse, of to Tyng street, Newhuryport, a member of the Board of Aldermen for two years, and Common Council for three years, says : "My ex. perience with and opinions of Doan's Kidney Pilla which I expressed through our newspapers in 1896, after taking a course of the treatment, have not altered. I value that preparation more highly to- day than I did when I first published my statement, and that is over three years ago. To my personal experience I can add that of many others in this city who one and all coincide with me in saying that Dosn's Kidney Pills act as repre- sented.

A Hint to the Cook. Be sure to cool all soup stock rapidly This is most necessary if you want it to keep a few days. If it is allowed to cool partially on the range before it is strained it will not keep well. The more quickly It is cooled off after the straining the better it is. Aga'n, cook- Ing rpeat at a high and in a dry tem- perature develops a richer and more savory flavor, and that is why in some of the brown soup stocks, when it is poss ble to do so. it is well to brown the meat before adiling the water to It. You cannot do this with honillon or white soup on account of preserving the transmirency and the whiteness. Visitors to Washington will probably remember an oid second-hand book dealer, who on nire days sits In front of his shop, on the north side of Penb- sylvania avenne, just opopsitr the Peace monument, says the New York Herald. He is as much u part of Washington ns is the white house, and he numbers among his friends many of those proni- Inent in national affairs. He tells many umusing stories of the statesmen of the lays jast following the civil war. Hle relates one story in which hr and Pres- dent Grant figured rather promi- tently.
The old bookseller hul received # ticket for a theatrical performance. Il went curly and took his seat in the parquet. Soon a family consisting of a husband and wife and several grown- up daughters took the seats to his right. A little Inter a mun enme und sat on his left. next the aisle. The old hook- seller is blind In the left eye and did not pay nos attention to the man on his left. At the end of the first act the Indy on his right leaned over and asked bim if the stranger were not President Grant. Sure enough, It was, and the lady was so informed.
"1 reckon maybe you kin see a mite better from this chair where I'm sittin'," the old gentleman remarked, "and if you think you'd rather change with mr I'm willing."
A second invitation was not requireil. "And I didn't have to ebange only with the woman, but with her hull family, and I thought they'd push me out lu the aisle. But I'll bet that to this day the woman tells of the time when she Nat next to the president," the old book- seller adds.
COSTLIEST IN WORLD.
The Cradle In Which Each First-Born Son of Marlborough Honer In Rocked.
There is exhibited In the drawing rooDi at Marlborough house the won- derful golden cradle in which each first- born son of the house of Marlborough is rockell during his infancy, says Ains let's Magazine. In this cradle, which is perhaps the most beautiful and costly thing of its kind in the world, the pres- ent little marquis of Blandford was placed on his christening day, when he had been given the name of John Albert Edward William Churchill. The little heir, by the way, is named for three
well-known persons: John, for the great duke; Alhert Edward, for the prince of Wales, one of bls godfathers, and William, for his grandfather and godfather, Willlam K. Vanderbilt. The two children are very closely guarded in the nursery, which consists of the most charming sulte of rooms In the palace. Ilere the young duchess, who Is a most proud and devoted mother, spends much of her time with ber babies. When they go nut In their blue and white perambulators for ex- ercise they are wheeled about in what Is known as the "kitchen gardens." among the fruits and vegetables, for except on show days the kitchen gar- dens are not delivered over to tourists for Inspection. Thus the two little lords may hold high carnival without fear of public Intrusion anil snapshoot- ers. On other days they are wheeled about where their nurses will, within the 350 acres of private grounds, which are walled off from Blenheim park.
