A GREAT VICTORY
For Americauism, Protection and Sound Money,
The expected has happened.
The American peuple have repudiated free alver even more emphatically than they did four years ago. Brynu and Bryanishi are dead. Republicanism, as imilicated by a stund for soundl money, home pro- tection and a new colonial policy, has re ceived an emphatic endorsement at the hands of nearly eight million voters. As was to have been expected the gold Demi- werats returned in large numbers to their
original party, though not diminishing
the Republicau plurality, and an in- weased number of states have en- dorsed the principles of the Republican party and the acts of President Mckinley. He is no longer a "dictator," a "ezar;" fullest anthority has been given him, with the consent and advice of congress, to clarify in the quickest aud wisest man. ner the clondy and uusettled Philippine condition, and no one doubts but that the desired result will be accomplished. Just how it is to be done no one knows. Mr. Bryan himself, had he been elected, would have been obliged to feel his way carefully, relying upou thre good judg. ment and sound sense of the country- to guide llu in his acts.
Imperialism never existed, except in
the minds of those who would use the . word for a campaign cry. Extension, a new colonial policy, were words that the Republican party welcomed, were pre- paren to stand by and were convinced were measures that would meet with the approval of the people. "They did meet with that approval.
The effects of the election were felt it- stautly and they will be far reaching. Better times nre as certain as the law of cause and effect. Already plans are be- ing carried out which had been projected only upon the basis of Republican suc- cess. Uncertainty now gives way to certainty. The tariff, the monetary question, etc., will not now embarrass financial operations, and the merchant, the manufacturer and the laborer can tace the future without a misgiving.
