means strong enough. The result is that the colony will cast small swarms If allowed to swarm nt nll, aud if pre- vented by the usual method of removing the queen cells the old queen seems to pout about it and persists In starting more queen cells and also seeins to make a specialty of the queen cell busi- ness, neglects laying generally, and the result is a colony that will store but lit- tle If any surplus honey. Much Inrger crops would be the result if cach col- any of bees were to receive a newly hatched and fertile queen in the early spring and before the principal flow be- gan. This method of management would in great mensure prevent swarm- ing and also add to the number of bees in the hive, which is the two prime requisites In the production of large honey crops. No queen over two years old should be retained in a hive and it will be better still to requeen every year, even if the queens have to be pur- cbased at one dollar each, which is the usual price of them, but It is inch "chenper for everyone who keeps bees to rear their own queens, which may readily be done even with a few hives of bees. Some queens are far superior to others and at the same time may he of the same race or variety .- A. H. Duff. in Pralrie Farmer.

Combs In Cold Weather. Every winter damages the birds more or less by injuring the combs. When a comb is frosted it turns black and often the points decay and fall off. It is very painful, and results in a loss of eggs. as the birds will not lay until the comb is thoroughly healed. The waitles also freeze, especially when wet, as is the case with birds Ilint drink from an open vessel. The best remedy for frosted combs is to keep the birds free from dranghts and anoint the combs with n few drops of glycerin and ernde petro- leum mixed. To prevent the difficulty. if necessary, ent off the combs and wat. tles with a sharp knife or shears, dip the head in alum water and put the biras in a dry, warm place. Should the weather he warm rah the cut surface with crude petroleum as a protection against flies .- American Gardening.

Increasing the Mongre Supply. Never enough manure is made upon the farm to meet all the needs of the soil. Where the farmer lives near a city or town he can often get fresh manure for the hauling or a little more. It is always safe to go on the principle. in getting strange stable manure, that it ia full of weed seeds, and to adopt mens. ures to kill them. Compost such ma- nure in flat piles, mixing with it a con- siderable quantity of unslaked lime. As soon as the pile is made soak it thor- oughly und cover it with a blanket of dirt three or four inches thick, slapping it down with a spade. The lime will immediately slake, generating a heat which will kill the seeds, the dirt cov- ering keeping the heat confined .- Guy E. Mitchell, in Farm and Fireside.

A LASTING EFFECT.

This Evidence Should Prove Every Claim.

Relief from the paine and aches of a bad back is alwaye welcome to every backache sufferer, but to cure a lame, week or aching hack is what's wanted. Cure It so it will stay cured. It can be done. Here's the strongest evidence to prove it.

Mr. H. P. Smith, blacksmith, of Elm street, Amesbury, Mass., says: "'Mrs. Smith, from a cold which settled in her loins, suffered ao severely from heckache that she was unehle to attend to the or- dinary household duties, often finding it Impossible to even make a bed for three months. I had read a great many state- mente of residents of Amesbury who pos- itively declared that Doan'e Kidney Pille had cured them of backache end other symptoms of kidney complaint. This led me to make some inquiries, and as a re- salt Mrs. Smith tock a thorough couree of the treatment. It cured her. It is so long ago thet I am confident the resulte are permanent, We never lose an oppor- tunity of advising others who suffer from either weakened or over-excited kidneys to procure Doan's Kidney Pille, and we know of scores In and around Amesbury who have taken our advice and were not only surprised hut gretlfied at the hene- fits received."

Jack's Triumph.

He told her she was eweeter than the pelele of the cose, He told her she wae fairer than the Illy: She pouted and pretended to turn up her pretty nose,

And she answered: "Jack, I pray you. don't be silly .**

Another who was richer and who knew much more than Jack Came woolng the sweet malden who had pouted;

He looked upon her fondly, but she only turned her hack-

The love that he bestowed on her che flouted.

That she was like a rose or like a lily; Jack came again and flattered ber In his old. foolish way,

When to Bny Mill Feed.

At this time of year millers need all thelr spare store room to hold grain, and will sell hran and wheat middlings much cheaper than they can afford to do later in the season. There is often a saving of two or three dollars per ton, even though the price of grain does not advance if the mill feed needed for win- ter aod spring use is purchased now. If farmers have spare room in their harne that can he kept always dry they can profitably use it for storing hran, though it is very hulky in proportion to its cost, and for that reason room for It canoot be afforded where storage is expensive. - American Cultivator.
