Thus In all directions, wherever une may look, are to be seen buildings of Anch singular architectural and histori- cal beauty of fame as to well entice the traveller to stay, and within are a tloius- and attractions of portraits, maunscripts, statues, telies, old letters and does- ments, maps and collections of interest- ing objeels, well worthy the attention. Nestled among hills whose verdure hardly deserts jis enormous trees the year around; filled with the memories. anecdotes and reminiscences of our gl rions past. characteristic with a popula- tion descended from old colonial dames and gentlemen, and served today by the grinning darkey whose grand, and great and still great grandmothers were the Aunt Chlues of the revolutionary kitchens, no wonder the place has be- come a favorite resting place in the trail of the swallow, buund sonth.

CORA LINN DANIELS,

Down the Road.

.As you went down the road, dear. As you went down the road, How chill the breeze began to blow, My heart took up Its load: The skies that had been hlue and bright, How fast they darkened into nigh !! And will you ne'er turn hack, dear? And shall we never meet? Do no glad cries come up the road ? No swift returning feet? Half way to meet you I would run, Though long the way and set the sun. Alas! the days go on, dear: How dulled the daylight seems Since you went down the road, dear, And left me to my dreams. Left me to bear my weary load As I toll after, down the road. -Danske Dandridge, In N. Y. Independent.

The Harvester. Sweet Death, that linger'st In the field When reapers' songs are heard no more, And win not let the smallest yield Of sweetness miss the season's store! Dear Death, whose dim, mysterious hand Permits no meanest flower To hloom alone when all the land Has rendered up its dower!

True Angel of God's wiger ways, True friend of all that strive; Shall we shrink from thee when the days Of tipening auns arrive?

When Bowers fall and fruit Is borne, And trees are touch'd hy wester'ng sua, Shall we remain unplucked, forlorn, In felds all waste and dun!

Energy all gone? Headache? Stomach out of order? Simply a case of torpid liver. Burdock Bluod Bitters will make a new man or woman of you.

The Eternal Love,

In every human love, Love lives, God of the Apostles' Word; Rooted in Paradise, It gives 1.Ife still to new life stirred.

Though wisdom nor great fulth be mine The mountain's weight to move, Still let me hear that song divine, The world's deep hymn of love.

Who never In the loved one's eyes Has seen life grow divine Is blinded by care's earthly prize. Nor sees Heaven's pure love shine. For Wisdom's proudest work shall fall. Earth's crumble to decny. Love's triumph far exceedeth all- It lives in endless day. -Alrs. Andrew Beattle, in N. Y. Ohserver.

When Spring Returns,

When spring returns with song and flowers, And illls the world with glee. Then come to us the happy hours Of duys that used to be; Our childhood's grace ngain we irace In fleld and forest fair, And bird and flower have magic power- Enchanting everywhere!

When spring returns with Its new life, Beyond the bourne of time, And we have passed the winter strife, And reached the heavenly clime, Perhaps the grace of earth's old place May come with gladness there, And memory trile old scenes renew- In beauty fresh and fair!

Fertility from Roadsides. On a very much traveled road there ia a great deal of excrement dropped from the borses used in drawing vehi- cles and from other animals driven thereon. Most of the soluble parta of this excrement are washed into the ditches on either side of the rondway. They accumulate in all the depressions and make a strata of rich sojl. which is well worth the Inbor of drawing into adjoining fields os a fertilizer. It ia best to do this while the field is plowed. and the rondside should also be plowed and cultivated, so that the rich soil can be evenly distributed over the surface.

LIVE

STOCK

AN EXCELLENT PLAN.

Catching, Mnvlug und Shipping Hogy, Sheep and Yeurllag Cattle Made Eusy.

My plan of crating live stock, hogs, calves sheep and yearlings is to have four pieces three by three inches and three feet long (or more for large stock), as corner pieces. Then four boards, a, six Inches wide and six feet or more long are nailed securely as side pieces. Double end bonrds are two feet ten inches long and nailed securely. At one end of crate, two boards, h h, are

To handle hogs, take three planka one foot wide, place one end in rear of wagon, other on ground, as shown at c. "Two men take the crate at each end, follow up and drop over the hog and then walk the hog under the crate, up the plank on the wagon. In this way I bave loaded alone hogs that weighed 400 pounds. Keep crate close to ground or the hog will poke her nose under and crawl out. If hogs are wild, feed them and while eating set crate over them. I lead hogs from pen to pasture in thie way. - C. A. FARM POULTRY HOUSE.

A Cheap and Conveulent Structure, with Scratching Peu, Large Ennugh for Fifty Heus.

A anbseriher at Sidney, O., nsks for a plan for a house that will accommodate 50 hens, with a 'scratching pen at- tached. He says it must be cheap as well aa convenient. I present the plan of a house that I think will be suitable. The scratching pen is under the same roof and is separated by only a wire or lath partition, shown at A. In this pen all feeding should be done. The size of the house is 16x20 feet and nine feet at the highest point of the roof. The front slope of the roof should be six feet long

to accommodate a hot-hed sash, and would need three of them. The parti- tions should divide the house into four equal parts, a scratching pen and 8 roosting and nest room on each. side, Place the water, ground hone and gritsin the roosting or nest. room and do all of the feeding in the scratching room, and also keep the dust hath in this room right under the glass so that the sun will shine in it and keep it dry and warm. For cheapness and durs- bility I would cover the roof with Ne- ponaet roofing and paint it well; hoard up the eides and ends and batten the cracks.

Thia style of a house is the most roomy and convenient of any I know of, and almost any farmer can build one. To atart one, draw your plans. first, to a scale and see how your lum- ber will cut to advantage. Hang a cab. bage or other vegetables in the roost room eo that the fowls can pick it from the rooat hoard and the floor. and fall off once in awhile for exercise. The plans are plain and self-explanatory .- E. E. Page, in Ohio Farmer.

A WORD ABOUT QUEENS.

Every Culnuy of Bees Should Receive a New One Before the Prin- cipal Flow Beglus.

The bright aplariat requeens colonies of bees almost every year. While queens may live three or four years, and In some case even five years, yet they out. live their usefulness and are not near bo prolific the second year as they are the first and seldom prove profitable the third year of their lives. It is true there are some exceptions, but the above Is the general rule. Old queens usually quit laying eggs entirely at the close of the honey season during the fore part of the aummer, and even if the honey flow continues well ou in summer they will check up on egg production. While good young queens lay more eggs during the honey season than old ones, they con- tinue to lay eggs allsummer to some ex- tent and in autumn months brood will be found in their combs, hence euch colonies are In the beet condition to fuo- ceeefully go through the winter, and al- waye come out stronger in the spring. Old queens are more Inclined to #warm, nnd will deposit eggs in the queen cell
