Degeneration.

A saying credited to a daughter of a cabinet minister is going the rounds these days. It relates to an artress who recently played an engagement here, and it was made, 1 am told, at a din- ner party one evening. The topic of conversation was the play and the actress.

"I didn't care for ber," s&ld some- body. "I think she bas grown too stont. She doesn't act nearly so well as she used. Don't you think she has lost ground ?" this to the cabinet minister's daughter,

"Yes," answered she, "growing stout hasn't improved her work. She seems to be suffering. in fact, from fatty de- generation of her art."-Wasbington Post

Frost Flowers, The phenomenon called "frost flow- ers" was discussed before the Biolog- teal society in Washington recently by Dr. L. II. Dewey. The so-called flow- ers are composed of ice which forms on frosty mornings In autumn and early winter on certain plants. The pecnllar thing to be explained is that frost flowers do not form on all plants, but only on about 26 species, as far as yet known. Among these are frost weed, dittany, marsh fleabanes and cultivated heliotrope. The phenome- non is apparently due to capillary movement of water in the plant, but wholly satisfactory explanation ts lacking .- Youth's Companion.

The art of writing a short story must seem to be easy to many people, and they never realize its difficulty until they try. In a southern school the teacher, as an educational experiment, Resigned each pupil the task of writing an original story.

On the day when the stories were read a bright little towhead arose and started In as follows:

"On the green slope of a mountain stood a first-class Jersey cow, with three legs."

"That won't do, Johnnle." interrupt- ed the teacher. "you are one leg short." "No, I ain't." replied the future au- thor. "You don't wait to get my plot, which is that a railroad train cut off one Jeg, and the owner of the cow got $3,000 damages, and moved his whole family to Paris in time for the exposition, where the girls will be married to rich Frenchmen and die happy ever after- ward!"-Golden Days.

Another Man Made Happy.

Harry-I have about decided not to get married next month. Herbert-What's the matter, old man? Getting shaky? Harry-No; but I don't want to bother about the groceries.

Herbert-Oh, that is easy enough. All you have to do is to have the FALES order team call and your wife won't have a particle of bother about the amount or the quality of tbe goods.

Harry-That's all right, and it's just what I'll do. Much obliged.
