Nantucket and Benj. Frankiln. (Continued from First Page ..
¡ many of his political essays were writ- ten for this purpose and easily fulfilled it, although useless nod forgotlen in this age of the world. And back of much of bis witty nonseuse is the purest tusel- fishness and thought for the general good, In that way only could sume be reached, and either disposed of as in corrigible biudrances or aroused to hester and helpful thoughts and convictions. His comprehension of the most iliverse aud opposite characters, aud how best to plead with euch and mning all together in comparative harmony, was niexce 'ed in his day or ours.
So it was that his underlying cop scientiousness Is seen in everything he undertook, and his sincere, even d'gui- fied, regiet over what he called the "er rata" of his life give evidence of Intrin sic strength and purity of thought, And this priceless inheritance, hol the least. of which was the strong common sense and philosophical endurance engendered by the pioneer life of both parents be came, in our country's grent neei, a bulwark wluch no power conkl shatter, and a steady guide and support which never fails d.
Anıl just here let us fully realize that Le really disliked nudne adulation, such as he felt obliged to endure from some during his sojourn in France. The sin cere respect and affection of the French people he appreciated and enjoyed, but everything beyond that was thoroughly distasteful to him. He was old and in- firm mu health and would rather have re mained in his own home. But, as usual, he was ready to help his young nation by representing it in Paris, because no one else cuulil so easily preserve the kind feeling between the two countries. There is much said, and it is needed, about children having a right to be weil born. This night was not denied to Benj. Franklin in any degree. And his appreciation of this is seen in his .asting respect and affection for his parents, As he says on the suite which be placed over their graves: ' Ile was a pions and prudent man, she a disciert and virtuous woman." The whole inscription, which ix the exjuraston of hits matuned and chastened minul, gives numis akable evi. dence of his thurungh real zation of that foundation upon which alone can be en- duringly haft time mental power, the pure grrm frum which a' ne can be de- veloped a clear and annual perception of universal hinih

If he travels there ure uncomfortable hotels wbere he pays three times the price of nll things nnc then is, in luck if he gets them. ~ A sea trip is considered the grande>1 pick-me-up invented. Some people find their illeal of a hol iday in a farmhouse or cottage by the sea. There the lover of nature is in his glory. It is heaven on earth to think about, hut in reality it may rain al the time and the cottage contain notli ing more interesting than a vuse of mineral specimens or butterflies fo amusement.
Another way of tirlng onesel. thoroughly is to go on a bicycle trip across rountry. One can scoret along hot and dusty roads, pust his wheel np hills till his face looks like the kitchen fire on an ironing day, Stop one night nt a bo tel and then push on to the next place markeil on the map. People say they enjoy this sort of thing. but one has the lurking fear they are pretending Imagine the discomfort and then he happy that home is near.

Her Last Course.
When i married my wife she had studied stenography, Got that down solld, then took up pho. tography; Mastered that science and started geog- raphy.
All in the course of a year.
She presently took up a course of theology, Followed that up with a touch of myth- ology,
Got a degree In the line of zoology. (Sulli her great mind remained clear), Fo she took in a course on the theory of writing. Some lessons and points on the subject of nghiing. A long course of house-bulliling, heating and lighting.
Far over her classmates she'd soar.
So she entered the subject of steam naviga- tion,
Took also Instruction in church education, And mastered the study of impersonation. And still she was longing for more. Next she tackled the lutest great fail-elec- tricity. "Dress reform" institutes taught her alm- plicity.

Not All Pleasure.
The troubles of a millionaire are il- lustrated by a story told of William Rockefeller hy one of bis attorneys. The oil magnate bought n large tract of land in the Adirondacks, which he uses as a game preserve and forest home. A local paper announced that Mr. Rocke- feller intended to buy half the Adiron- dacks and make them into a park. The article was widely quoted, and soon let- ters hegan to pour in. The letters were soon followed by brokers, farmers, real estate agents and speenlators. Rockefeller at first denied the report, Mr hut this had no effect. His secretary answered et red every letter in the, negative hut this proved ineffective. His clerks were instructed to tell all callers that their employer did not want any Adi- roudack land, but even this was futile. Not long ago Mr. Rockefeller was driv- ing, and stopped to rest bis horses, when a man suddenly walked out from behind the trees and asked for a match. Mr. Rockefeller went through his pock- ets and handled the man three or four. The man struck a match and said: "1 am much obliged to you, sir; I wanted a match very bailly, and you came just in the nick of time. By the way. I believe you are Mr. William Rockefeller and you want to buy some land in this neighborhood, Now I-" The sen- tence was not finished. The unhappy capitalist threw the box of matebes to the unin and drove off in n gallop.

THE BEAUTY OF THE LORD.
Go, study Nature's picture book, In flowery field and mossy nonk. And And the wealth of beauty's dower Is of the Lord in grass and flower.
Go, watch the waters brightly gleam In meadow brook or mountain ptrram: The watery sheen In beauty shown Has source beneath the Great Throne.
Go, search the dome of heaven's height, Where beauty's dress Is tinted light; Both clouds and stars with one accord Proclaim their beauty of the Lord.
Go, stand afar on holy ground Where righteousness and truth are found. Let beauty" fill thy soul with awe, His beauty who gave Sinal's law.
Or, rather. sit at His dear feet Whose love and mercy Justice meet; Thine eyes shall see all beauty then As Son of God and King of men -Rev. W. J. Gray, In Chicago Advance.
THE FRIENDSHIP OF NATURE.
God's World Ont of Doors Is Respon- ulve-Teaches Strength and Cheer and Patience,
The friendship of nature is a phrase whose meaning can only be determined in the case of any individual by his ca- pacity for making friends. God's world out of doors is responsive. It renders gift for gift and thought for thought. Yet it is never obtrusive. As with the dearest inner circle of loving and under- standing friends one may dispense with words and share the quiet of a happy hour, so in the mood of silence as in the joy of active thought the sky broods over us, the trees give us their motion and their shade. the sea lifts and re- treats upon the sands or leaps to meet the prow of our on-moving boat. If we have hearts to feel the joy of a compan- jonship that never flatters and never denies Its ministry we shall be lovers of nature and admitted to be sbarere of her life.
In this responsive power nature comes closer to us than most of our human friends. We must allow for the play of our dearest companion's mood whatever our own may be, for his right of self-expression, for his need of sym- pathy which costs us some forgetting of our own first impulse, Though we meet upon equal terms, there is this necessary element of self-suppression iu the relation wbich, indeed, contrib- utes to Its joy but makes it something different from communion with nature, which makes no such demands. She will go with us on our chosen path of feeling, making our joy more joyful, our grief more real, but gradually win- ning to purity the thought that was confused and purging the sorrow of all morbid elements. As the stream cleanses itself in flowing, the thought la its companionship with the pure life of nature grows more innocent and clear.
Her friendship, therefore, is a thing apart. A great, calm spirit breathes in her ismiliar scenes, It is not hur- ried, as men hurry. It is not caught by the eddying flattery or doubt of the mo- ment, but its life flows on with clear prevision of the stream's purpose and the stream's final goal. Her gray skies are as healing as ber blue if we will
