FOR THE CHILDREN.

Give Them a Bit of Groond and Let Them Cultivate Flowers and Follage Plants.

No occupation is so healthy, innocent and instructive for children,as cultivat- ing a little garden of their own. Give them a bit of ground in the spring- no matter if it be no larger than a bed- spread-and give them the seeds of Buch bright and easily-grown flowers as pinks, petunias, daisies, mignonette and the old-fashioned marigold, four- o'clock, and lady-slipper, now called hulsam. Provided with a little spade, and a hoe that has a small rake at the buck, and dressed in plain clothes that cannot be easily spoiled and stout shoes, the boys and girls will derive more than enough benefit from the out- door exercise to repay you for the ex- tra washing it may make. It is a great deal cheaper to hire a washwoman than to pay a doctor. Then the pleasure and the good wholesome knowledge that comes through the cultivation of plants. The delight of watching the growth of the green things from the time the tiny spear pierces the dark mold until the bud and then the blossom -- the crowning glory of the plant-is devel- oped at the end of the tender stalk.

The plot for the children's garden should be well prepared-spaded and made soft, then smoothly raked. The child's name, or the initial lettera'of the name, may be sown in fine grass seed, or the seed of china pinks, or of flax. Make the letters in the smooth, soft soil with a pointed stick or the finger. Sow the seeds in the little furrows thus made, and cover firmly, pressing down the earth firmly but not too compactly. Sprinkle with warm water, and the seeds will quickly vegetate, and the little one sees with wondering delight his name traced in living green letters on his garden plot .- The Half Hour.

THE GARDEN CROPS.

If Properly Harvested, Handled and Stored Any of Them Can Me Kept for a Long Time.

When storing vegetables handle them

carefully. Bruises liberate moisture which in time enuses decay. If the vegetables have been exposed to the hot sun, allow them to cool before stor- ing. Tubers of all kinds, such as tur- nips, beets, carrots, vegetable oysters, etc., should be packed in barrels -or boxea with some earth mixed through "them and a layer on top. Potatoes keep

better in small heaps. There is no bet- ter place for onions than in a garret or outbuildling, where the temperature is just above the freczing poiut. Spread clean straw about a foot deep on the floor, and upon this place the onions eight or ten in depth, covering with two feet of straw. If the temperature of the room should fall below the freezing point the straw will keep them from freezing. But two or three light freez- ings will not injure onions,

Cabbage may be kept in fine condl- ion until January by cutting off the stalks and trimming off the outer leaves, wrapping them in three or four thicknesses of newspaper and placing on a shelf in the cellar. For late win- ter and spring use it is best to store them outside. Bury a box or barrel in the ground in a dry situation. Trim the heads and wrap them in newspapers, put them in the barrel and spread a layer of leaves or straw on top and cov- er with boards so it will be waterproof. When the weather becomes colder put on a little dirt and add to it as the cold increases. Squashes and pumpkins may be kept in any dry, airy place un- til freezing weather, and then put in the cellar. One of the best methods of preserving squashes for winter use is to give them a coat of varnish .- Farm end Home.

BUFFALO TREE HOPPER.

A. Permiclous Little Innect That Has Dene Much Damage During the Past Few Years.

The buffalo tree hopper has done much injury to young orchards and other trees during the past few years, and the several inquiries sent into this office suggest this article. Ordinarily the Insect is not seen, but peculiar scars

Fig.1

Fig. 2.

THE BUFFALO TREE HOPPER. are found in the bark which give the. twigs a battered appearance. (See Fig. 1.) The injury is done by the insect, aa shown by Fig. 2. It is a curious-look- ing affair which causes the injury by laying its eggs in the hark. Thia in- sect feeds by sucking the juices of the plant, so no poison Is effective; but in sucking the sap they are not seriously injurious. The worst harm they do is in cutting the slits in the bark, in the doing of which they seem to poison the wood so it does not heal readily. They aeldom cause any harth to large trees, but young trees niny be seriously In- jured hy them. The remedies nre the removal of the eggs and by jarring the insects into olled' sheets. They'mature insect is about one-third of an inch long, green in color. with brown dots. It is very shy, and quickly jumpa away If frightened .- Farm and Fireside.

Catching Rats on the Farm. Set your steel trap In a corn-sack. Roll in the mouth of the sack until a space is left just large enough to con- tain the trap. The rat sees the ears of corn through the trap, and in reach- ing for them strikes the pedal with his nose. The trap is thus sprung so as to catch him just behind the ears, and his death is instantaneous. This is more humane than catching him by the leg and enusing him to suffer all night. I have caught three successive- ly in that way, and I believe it will prove successful in most cases. By the way, there is no surer wny to rid the prem- ises of rats than by using a sack partly filled with corn in the ear. You are sure of one about every night until they are exterminated .- Walter S. Smith, in Farm and Manatil-

Doan's Kidney Pills Set matters right quickly and easily. They never fail, even in the most ad- vanced stages of kidney disease. Mrs. C. V. Pitts, of 21 Broad street, New London, Conn,, whose huaband cobduets a grocery store says :.

"Previous to using Doan's Kidney Pills In The winter of 1996 I was greatly inconveni- enced by pain and lameness across the small of my back. The treatment cured that par- ticular atluck, and I made the facis known to The people of ole of New London through our daily papers. Il Is over three years since my original statement was given to the public and all I can add to It is that during the Ilmc specified I have found that a dose or two of Doan's.Kidney Pills prevent recurrences." in the cut, and they can be'opened and closed at will from the ground floor. The triangular pieces nailed to the sides of the sash hold up the window a little inclined Inward, so that it falls open by its own weight when the cord is loosened, The same result could be ob- tained by the usual sash that closes to perpendicular position, but has a second cord running from the outer end of the iron rod down to the floor. Pull- ing on this cord would open the window. while pulling on the pulley cord would close it, when the line could be fastened below .- N. Y. Tribune.
