You wouldn't pay for a dozen oranges and accept half a dozen. Yet you pay for a pound of coffee and accept half a pound ! Suppose you look at it in this way :- You buy coffee for its flavor and aroma. Roasted cof. fee parts very quickly with both when exposed to the air. It is possible for a pound of coffee to lose one-half its strength. It is then of no more value than half a pound of fresh coffee.

When you buy exposedi coffee from a bin it has lost more or less of its virtue. You don't get it allt It is just as if you had bought pears and some one hand bitten a piece from each pear. Now, to show you how much you have been losing, take home to-day a one or two-pound air- tight can of

THE PRICE OF BEEF.

It Is Bound to Reuinin 11lgh Uneti Farmers Stop Selling Their Calves for Veal.

There has been a great deal said about high prices of beef. I will give you my observations about it. 1 agree with most of them that it is supply and de- mand that cause high prices. Some four or five years ago prices were too low for Ili'nois and eastern state farm- ers to compete with western range cat. tle, so they sold what they bad at low prices, and in place of rnising from two to ten calves they let them suck till four to six weeks old and soll them in Chicago for real. That was the liest way for them to do at the time. Now it is different. The western range cattle are not in such great num- bers as four or five years ago, If n feeder here wants to feed cuttle be goes to Chicago and ships them In tu feed. because be can't pick up his feed- ers here in the country as before. If prires stay where they are now. next spring will see Illinois farmers raising more valves and better bred ones. lv about three years they will he ready for market, Just think. if every form- er en >0 or 160 acres throughout !!! nois and the eastern states would raise two steers a year, what a supply that would make! Meanwhile prices will be high till that is done, in my opinion .- S. Dill. in Drovers' Journal.

The state department has received a report from Consti livenin at Udlessa, Russia, stating d'at the failure of the crops in many : the provinces of Eu- rope n l;lasta is a much more serious affa r than is generally admitteil. En- ergetic steps have just been taken to ure: the situation. The famine dis- tricts are divided up and government ail is being given according to the ex- tent of the failure in the several dis- triets, Employment alsp is being given to a large number of pensanta on spe- cia nes uf work, such as road making. One of The most difficult questions 10 be s'ilved is how working stock and other animals are to be saved, the bay erop liping a complete failure.
