From Potatoes to Rye. The land that was devoted to potatoes this year should be seeded to rye, limed in the spring and corn grown on the some land next year. Such a plan gives the land two weedings and cleans It thoroughly, It is also un ndvantage not to grow potatoes on the same land offener than oue year in four as a pre- caution agniust disease. Rye should cover all land that Is plowed In the full. ns it prevents loss of fertility, and when, turned under in spring it will add fertilizing material to the soil, the lime being used to neutralize any acidity that mov exist.

TESTING THE SEEDS.
Department of Agriculture Tella Farmers How to Make n Germ- Inator at Home.
Most seed dealers now make germina- tion tests before puttiag their seeds on the market, sad extensive work of this class is done by the department of ag- riculture. "Consomers will also find it much to their advantage to test the via- bility of seeds, but as a rule they have the impression that seed-testing re- quires elaborate apparatus and some

complicated scientific process to con- duet it successfully. That this opinion Is inaccurate is shown by the home- made germinator seen in cut, repro- duced from Circular No. 18, issued by the division of bontany, United States department of agriculture. A piece of moist flaunel is placed on a plate, the seeds put on the flannel, a second piece of moist flannel being laid over them, and a second plate is then inverted over the whole. A certain number of seeds should he carefully counted out, and the germinating ones removed and counted as fast as they appear, In testing crim- son clover, if the seed is good, 50 to 90 per cent. should sprout within three days. The government seed expert. A. J. Pieters, especially advises tests be- fore saw'n cries ne. ver. Most foul- tre " wil it a warm kl seed, but

LICE HERDED BY ANTS
Parasites Pastured on the Roots ot Peach Trees for the Honey Dew They Furnish.
Maay Ohio peach orchards have beea suffering from the attacks of the wood louse or aphis, as it is more correctly known, and complaints were seat in from all over the state to the agricultur- al experiment station at Wooster asking what should be done to get rid of the pest. The lice were found on the roots of the trees, where they had stripped off the hark in order to get at the sap more readily. The authorities tried a number of insecticides, but without success, for whenever the insecticide was strong enough to kill the lice it also killed the tree. And, after a long serles of experiments, the conclusion has been reached that the only way of getting rid of the lice is to exterminate the ants which carry them about, for without the aid of the ants the aphis will he ut- terly unable to get to the roots of peach or any other trees.
The aphis occupies a queer place in the insect world, for the ants, Lasius Americaaus, use them for milch cows, herding and caring for them very much as a man teads his cattle. Ia the fall the ants collect the eggs of the aphides, carry them to their homes and care for them through the winter. As soon as spring opens and the eggs hatch out, the ants start out to find suitable peach tree pastures, The younger and more tender the tree the better. The ants hurrow down into the ground close to the bark of the tree and then run a series of galleries ont along the roots. After the galleries have been completed the ants carry the young aphides to the pasture ground, and, gnawing away the bark on parts of the roots, place the aphides around the edge in order that they may suck the sap freely. Here the the lice'are kept prisoners for the terms of their natural lives, the ants taking turns at herding them and keeping plenty of fresh roots exposed. Of course, the ants do not go to all this trouble without reward. From the back part of the alulomen of the louse project two glands which produce sugar or honey dew, as it is called. This Is gréedily devoured by the ants, and the lice are carefully temiled in andler that they may proiure as muelt of it as possible.
The depredations of the lice are not confined to the orchards. The corn firlls also suffer. The ants burrow lown to the roots of the corn stalks and place the lice there just as they do on peach trees, and the crops suffer in con- sequence .- N. Y. Sun.
Cucumbers for Pickles. Pickled cucumbers are sold by count. and the small ones are generally pre- ferred. Hence close picking and fre- quent pieking, so as to prevent any from growing too large, is necessary to secure large crops. Sometimes, how- ever, a stray cucumber will hide under the leaves uatil it has almost ripened its weds. It is astonishing how this les- eens the yield of the vine. Yet it is not to be wondered at, for the perfection of seed In almost all plants exhausts their vitality very rapidly. The encumber vines should. he handled carefully so ns not to loosen the roots which some of them send into the soil from the joints. These are great helps to the vine. I the vine is turned up to see what is un- der it some of these rootletw will be de. stroyed.

GRANULAR BUTTER.
Kow to Prodnee an Article That Will Keep Well for a Considerable Length of Time.
The following method is employed for making hutter which it is desired to keep for a considerable time. When the hutter has reached the granular condi- tion in churaing, that is, when the par- ticles are about the size of barley grains, the buttermilk is drawn off and ice-cold water added. The butter is then washed with cold water and re- moved from the churn to a stone jar without packing or mashing the graias. The jar is then filled with hriae. This brine will soon dissolve some of the casine in the butter and so acquire a cloudy aspect. A chaage of hrine will leave the second solution clear ou the butter. A plate should be used to cover the butter, allowing the briae to come up over it. The brine, of course, inter- mingles freely 'ahout each granule of hutter throughout the mass, which will preserve for weeks in this way. It caa be taken out any time and worked into rolls or prints, If too salty it may he washed out with clear water .- Guy E. Mitchel in Farm and Fireside.
Have You Heard Of II ?
You may have heard about SCOTT'S EMULSION and have a vague notion @ that it is cod-liver oil with its bad taste and smell and all its other repulsive fea- tures. It is cod-liver oil, the purest and the best in the world, but made so palata- ble that almost everybody can take it. Nearly all children like it and ask for more.
SCOTT'S EMULSION
looks like cream; it nour. ishes the wasted body of the baby, chid or adult better than cream or any other food in existence. It bears about the same rela- tion to other emulsions that cream does to milk. If you have had any experience with other so-called "just as good" preparations, you will find that this is a fact. The hypophosphites that are combined with the cod-liver oil give additional value to it because they tone up the nervous system and impart strength to the whole body.
