The governor of Texas has a name with which some people are fond of taking liberties. It is Hogg, and some of his enemies once started the story that he bad two girls, one of whom he named Cra logg, the other Ima Ilogg! Bnt, in a recent interview, Gov. Hogg bas this to say : "The truth of the mat- ter is that my girl's name is Ima logg. She was named by her mother. Her mother was reading a book somewhere, In which one of the characters which interested her exceptionally was named Ima. About that time the little girl came along, and she was named Ima. We never noticed the play on the name until it was called to our atten- tion. The boys all have rational names. They are Tom, Mike and Will." So the governor cannot be accused of in- tentionally making the little girl say she is a small, porkisb animal every time she speaks ber name!
The San Francisco Wave reports that a young woman who patronizes the free library at San Jose was anxious to read Hopkinson Smith's "Tom Grogan," rbenever she called for it the book variably "out." She begged then he librarian notify her by tele- phone as soon as the hook came in. The book was returned next day, and the librarian telephoned. It was the girl's father who answered. "Tom Grogan," he shouted, indignantly, "So Tom Grogan wants my daughter to come up after him. Look here, you tell that young man from me, if he wants to see my daughter he had hetter come here and do it."
A New York restaurant recently un- dertook to cafer exclusive y for obese people. Nothing of a fattening char- acter was served. The establishment was hailed with delight by a large crowd of beaty weights, Its history was about as follows: The first day 100 ate there, the secun ". 90; the third, &0, and so on down until the proprietor found himself without a single patron, when the sheriff came and took every- thing in sight.
A pitiful story, with a viry evident moral, come- from Toledo, O. Five rest- less boys left good homes to "see the world." They got as far as Akron. O., where an accident befell them as they were endeavoring to hoard a train, and now one of the five is dead, two are badly injured and in the hospital, and the other two are in ja'l. It hardly seems Decessary to comment upon this over-true story from real life. Anyone can easily draw the most evident moral from it.
Spain will not be surprised to learu that under the management of the I'nited States government the receipts of the island of Cuha from January 1, 1599. to June 30 exceed the expenditures by $1,480,12t. The surprising thing to Spain will he that the American uffi- cials didn't pocket the surplus hastily and say nothing.
Chicago Impers are printing sdver- tisements of this kind: "Wanted- An ahle man to cook und wash for a private family." The demand seems likely to be met, for one who is willing to work his way up advertises: "Wanted -- A position nx werond girl by an honest and capable you. g man."

Table Companions
We cannot always have with us our most congenial friends, but there is one table compar .on we need never be without.
We mean a cup of good tea. good pure tea is synonymous watlt Chase & Sanborn's package teas. These tens, because they are pure, are a real help to every one.
Tea is a healthful tonic when it is pure. Tea to be beneficial must have quality ; low grade teas do not possess to any degree the tonic effect. Because Chase & Sanborn's tras are sold only in half-pound and pound air tight, leaded forms, one may be sure they are fresh and of full strength.
The name of Chase & Sanborn on the package is sufficient guar- antee that the leaf is the best that can be selected.
The Kohinoor, Orloff and Orange Pekoe are special brands, adopted to meet the requirentents of indi- vidual tastes. They make an irre sistible trio.
One pound makes over 200 cups. Chase & Sanborn's Teas.

N TIME there are no rests sk in music. Time was in the without a- begruning. and time will be ever and forever. bulls.
Man, though, for his convenience or plenw. ule, or proht. establishes times and wea. Thus he says the first day of Jan- nary shall be termed the beginning of s New Year, The Romans, with an arnte portie sense that pervaded all their work, electeil to have the dawn of the year show in March-the first spring month. when nature kisses new life into everything and robes the earth in garments of many colors.
Man must have huis pauses and starting points. It is not so much a question of bratiment as of necessity that dates and sensolis he fixed. The success of business life depends upon it, and a untion with out a chronology is a people without a his- tory. Kach year must hold its own events, Tur may one trench upon the other.
Leaving this line of suggestion, one is led to the thought that these year posts of Inau's time offer opportunity for reflection upon what has been and what may be. Each New Year day tells not only of the new turtb, but also of the year that is sepul- tured. Here are presented in hrave con- traet life and death. As the old passes ont. the new comes in. So with man and all other animate things. "The king is dead; live the king."
No one lesson after another may be learned, if one be but a willing pupil. What the memories of the just dead year? What the sins, the errors, the follies?
What the good one did, and what progress in the knowledge that is lasting? Ah! the year 18 gone, gone to one and all of us; but the impression remains. These years one by one are character builders, each adding to the other until the mortal changes to the im- mortal!
Looking backward, what is the reckon- ing? Whatever most of good, or of ill, the New Year is at band. Let the accounting be just, that one may be ahler to meet justly and righteously the things that are before. One should recall the errors of the past, not that he may mourn over them, but that he may gain strength for future struggles.
Une need not give the whole of New Year's dny to the forming of good resolutions. Alas! there be many wbo do vow overmuch at such times. The hallway of the New Year, like that of hell, is paved with good inten- tions. One may resolve and resolve again, and swear lustily in confirmation of such purpose; yet all unavailingly, because of the frailty of his being. He acts the better part who reflects, and is not rosh in promises. Not the same to all is the history of the past year; and not two shall find the New Year the same in experience. But each year is for all, and has in abundance riches of good for every one. The year just closcd was lavish in gifts; the new offers plenty #4 great. It is but to look for it fearlessly ar .! the searcher will be rewarded.
The old was and is not. The new is het. with its portents. A warm heart for t.it year just dead, and a glad band for the oule that is newly born.
