Last Thursday morning the employes of the Norfolk Western Street Railway company presented retiring Superintend ent Spring a beautiful open faced gold watch upon his retirement to accept a similar position with the Newton and Boston Street Railway company of New tou.

Nickerson secured the drug while he was en route from the court house to the jail, a friend having shipped it to him. Sunday, while the guard was in auother part of the jail, Nickerson swallowed the pills, 16 grains in all. .


At 3 o'clock he was discovered and was deathly sick. The physicians were not long in learning the cause of the illness. He did not rally under four hours, and had it not been for the heroic treatment of the physicians le would have died. After regaining consciouness Nickerson said that he was sorry that he was not permitted to dle.


Nickersou wrote to a lady friend in Franklin telling ber that he was about to take his life because he could not bear to live out bis long sentence. The note was found in his cell.


Hoag lake closed its entertainment feature last Saturday night after a must successful season, the first of the kind evenenjoyed in this vicinity. A strictly high class vaudeville was presented, and the indications for an even more success- ful season next year are extremely good. The management preserved the best of order at the resort, establishing wu ex cellent reputation in that respect.
