RHYMES AND RUNES.

When Peggy Goes to Market. When Peggy takes her basket up And off to market goes, I'm stupefied with wonder at How very much she knows. She makes her way between the stalls And with judicial alr Decides that this is "so and so" And that is "pretty fair."

She knows If fish are fresh or not, And wise as any owl.

She differentiates between A chicken and a fowl

She thumbs the breastbone of the one And pulls the other's legs: She squints her pretty little eyes To test the new-laid eggs.

The veg'tables must be just right, For with a critic's eye She scans them, not Inclined to pass Their Imperfections by. She calls the market folks by name: Ah, what a lot she knows, When Peggy takes her basket up And off to market goes! When Peggy does the marketing. My heart with pride she fills; I go along, a useless thing. Except to pay the bills. Johnstone Murray, in What to Eat.

NEW BUTTER MARKET.

American Prodnet Brings Five Cents n Ponnd More In Berlin Than the Home .Article.

A cablegram from Berlin announces that the other day in Germany's capital city American butter sold over all com- petitors at an advance of 20 pfennig. or five cents of our money.

When we consider that Germany bas been the most persistent foe to Ameri- can agricultural exports, going so far even as to attack our apples and shut them out of her markets, we may see in this incident a hopeful change. But we may be sure of one thing-that but- ter was sold on its merits and the con- sumers paid five cents more per pound for it than other butters could be bad, not because it came from the U'nited States, but because it was gilt-edge in quality, pleasing in favor and bore the stamp of honesty and purity.

This is only one incident, but it iu- dicates great possibilities, not along the line of oleomargarine and process but- ter, but in the future of the first-class. pure article, such as American dair'y- men know how to produce, can produce in almost unlimited quantities and #: less cost than any other people in the world. What occurred at Berlin wri be possible in many other cities of Europe if we but keep our standard high, and insist that nothing but the genuine article be permitted to leave our shores .- Farmers' Voice.
