THE CENTAUR COMPANY, 77 MURRAY STRE!"

THEIR ISLAND FETE. BY KATRINA KLAUSEN.

IT WOULD be hard to find a more heau tiful place for a garden party than tht | sutmmer home of the Lindsleys, who, be sides having a bay all to themselves owned a dear little island in the middle Q! it, which Mr. Liudsiey had bought and named after his youngest daughter, llelen This summer had been one of the happiest the children had ever known at "Mount Pleasant." Swimming and tennis were thi favorite pastimes, and on Saturday even ings Mrs. Lindsley, who was as beautiful ar her daughters, chaperoned them to the dance at the hotel across the adjoining Jake. The sunimer was drawing to a close to everyone's regret, and the first of Aug net brought Helen's seventh. birthday which was to be celebrated by old and young.

the "I have written 30 invitations for child's party," said Mrs. Lindsey, "anc only six of them are for children. That i: positively all there are. around this lake, al least whom we know."

"Never mind, mother," said Kathryn. "Helen will have just as good a time, won't you, dear?"

"Yes, if you only have the supper ou! under the trees and have hearts with mot toes on, hecause I want to pick out a nice one for Mr. Archie," answered the child at she hurried out to see the lanterns strung among the trees.

The guests were asked to come at foni o'clock; so at that hour Helen and some ol the family were down on the pier to greet them. She looked like a little princess, in her dainty white dress and gorgeous red wash. Her dark curls were tied with a rih hon of the same shade and her blue eyet hirly danced as the Johnsons' pretty yachl ; nade the landing. They gave her three cheers before anyone came ashore, and though she was somewhat ahashed, the little lady made the prettiest little courtsey imaginable.

Each new guest brought some remem hrance of the occasion for the little queen. and each was well paid for their thought fulness hy the bright, happy smile with which she received them.

"She is her mother over again," said one, and no higher compliment could have heen paid her, for everyone who knew het sweet-faced mother loved her. She was the that were known about the resort, and for everyone there was always a kindly, cheery, happy word.

When several saillioats and rowhoats had landed their burdens the guests started up the hill towards the house, which was, in- deed, a pretty sight, as well as the sur- rounding grounds, while the sweetest music was played by an orchestra hidden among the trees. It was a red, white and blue

Pity and Beauty

The most beautiful thing in the world is the baby, all dimples and joy. The most pitiful thing is that same baby, thin and in pain. And the mother does not know that a little fat makes all the differ- ence.

Dimples and joy have gone, and left hollows and fear; the fat, that w > comfort and color and curve-all but pity and I veais gone.

The little one gets no fat from her food. There is some- thing wrong;iti- either her food or food-mill. She has had no fat for weeks; is living on what she had stored in that plump little body of hers; and that is gone. She is starving for fat; it is death, be quick !
