FISH SCALE HULL PLATING. (Ita Inventor Thinks It Will Revolutionize Ship Building.)

and particularly the construction of yachts and other speedy craft. This consists of a disposition of the material so as to conform, as nearly as possible. to the scales of a fish. Many of the me- chanical and engineering problems of the day are found to have been solved long ago by nature. but even so this proposition to follow nature and cover a ship with scales is rather startling. to say the least. The inventor claims that great speed may be obtained hy following this construction, which con- sists essentially in covering the huli with small plates of any snitable ma- terial, arranged like shingles, so as to overlap each other. Perhaps the twen- tleth century cup defender will he built on such lines, but why nature in her perfect work did not make whales with scalea Is another question.

Where the Haod-Organ Is a Favorite, One place at last has been discovered where the hand organ grinder is ap preciated. It is the Congo Free Stale, and the people there are so food of the music that the missionaries have turned it to excellent account. When they first weot there they found that the na- tives had a decided antipathy to the marital yoke, but they overcame it by an- nouncing that at every wedding a haod organ should play. The innovation was accepted with enthusiasm, aod the rush to the hymeneal aliar was tremeo- dous. So infatuated were some couples with the music of the ceremony that they insisted upon being married daily for several successive days. The Congo Free State appears to be the orgao grinder's paradise, aod if widespread publicity is given to the fact, it may induce an emigration in that direction, which will not only multiply marriages io that region, but relieve this from the tortures of the much-abounding barre! organ .- Chicago Tribune.

"Cover them carefully with straw and set fire to it, and then the little pests, after jumping in the flames for a few minutes, will he speedily settled." And the man with the grasshoppers was told to "give castor oil and rub their gums with a bone."-Columbian.

Atata for the Ladies on the Modes for the Winter Sen- son+

Stylish young women ara wearing with their winter shirt waists of silk, satio or eloth, in cream, cherry-red and other colors, the stiff stock of our revolutionary ancestors seen In min- latures and in larger portraits. The styla has been repeated not quite lit- erally, but effectively, In black satin, to wear with every sort of waist, In hlack nnd white effects and in pretty bright color inclanges, with gray, tan nud similar waists of neutral fabric. It has the appearance of a scarf enr. ried twice around the oeck nnd tied in a how in front above the high col- lar band, which is stiff enough to keep i the folds of the bins silk or ribbon in place.

There Is nothing in practical milll- nery this season that is more stylish, unobtrusive aod ladylike than the toques nud English walking hats, par- ticulnrly in hlnek, with their fnsh- ionable decoratlou of sahle plumes. Another satisfactory and becoming choice la the medium-sized round hat with all face, bnekle and floral garni- ture eliminated, and nothing used but velvet loops and full, handsome ostrich feathers. Those shown io the sbops for conservative wenrers nre notably attractive, as they present no erratic dents or startling outlines, neltber do they swoop low on one side of tha face and curve to the top of the bead on the other after the style of some of The astonisbing but very fashioneble shapes oow worn. When aot wholly straight and flat of hrim tba hats arch gracefully on each side above the tem- ples, and this slight lifting allows for some artistic bits of decoration under the brim just above the waves of hair -a becoming touch of color always re- lieving the dull, somewhat heavy ap- pearance of a black bat, particularly with a woman of pale or dark com- plexioo. All tha prevnlling styles can with perfect pro- priety be worn by gray-bnlred women if the fabrics und shades are carefully toned nnd seleetrd.
