MAKING REAL PEARLS.

A Method of Manufacturing Them nl & Triding Cusl Uns Just Been Discovered.

At various times attempts have been made to manufacture genuine dia- monds and otber precious stones, but the cost of manufacture has in each case proved so great that up to the present time no such dinmonds have been placed on the market. This statement, of course, does not apply to the manu- facture of artificial precious stones, which seems to be thriving at present. judging from a recent cable disptach to the New York Herald, which tokl

The point of interest just now is the fact that a method of manufacturing genuine pearls at a trifling rust has just been discovered, Manufacture. however, is hardly the right wurd. for it is nature herself whieb does almost the whole business. A natural pearl. we know, is formed through the in- trusion of a foreign body into the shell of å mussel.

The xea Inussel is popularly supposeil co have a monopoly of this business, but this is an error. A certain species of river mussels, technically known as Margaritana margaritifera, also pro- luces beautiful pearls.

The attention of a French naturalist, M. Boutan. a professor at the Sarbonue. was recent'y drawn to this fact, and he at onee conceived the idea of pru- ducing pearls by means of these river mussels. His first step was to prepare a sort of oyster bed for the propaga- tion of the mussels, after which he be- can to nid nature in her work of mak- ing pearls. In each shell be bored a small hole, and thorugh it he intro- Auced a tiny bit of mother-of-pearl into the body of the fish.

His work was now complete. and all ne hal to do was to wait until nainre bad emnparted the process. That he will in time reap a rich harvest seems o be the general opinion among nat. uralists. l:y the way. this method of manufacturing pearls is not pew. as the Chinese are said to have practised it for centuries.

IDEAL PIANO HAND.

Dellente Surgical Operation Is Said To Be Quite an Ald lo Ma- .leal Execullon,

The ideal piano handl is the result of considerable practice aad study, and the very best results cannot often he obtained for the simple reason that the hand and fingers of the piano players may not be limber enough at an early nge, and, when once the musel's are developed and set, it is a matter of considerable difficulty to train and de- velop them with the view of obtaining freedom of movement. The innst ditli-

cult problem is to obtain the freedom of the little and ring fingers from the movements of the middle finger.

When the anatomy of the muscles of the band is studied it will be found that these fingers are connected cross- wise ly tendons of grent strength, which are the cause of their simulta- neous movements and render inde- penilent motion almost impossible. Dr. Rartaz, of Paris, has undertaken recently a number of operations on the hands of pianists, successfully cut- ting the muscles (a and b in the cut) |Brooklyn life.

connecting these fingers, and giving their hands a freedom of most ment which could not have been attained even by the most persistent efforts in the ordinary way. It appears that the first operation of the kind was made by a Philadelphia surgeon, a Dr. Forbes. with whom the idea was original.

Many years ago Abbe Liszt. the fa- mous virtuoso, had a similar operation performed, which weat much further. Fle hal bis hand split between all the Angers as far ne the first joint. Microscope Deleels Crime. Modern scientific discoveries seem to be of the greatest use in running down criminals. A German diplomnt was telling the other day of a curious use of the microscope for this purpose recently made in Prussia. A barrel of specie sent from the frontier to Berlin was robbed and filled with sand. This was supposed to have been done on the way to Berlin. An eminent chemist obtained samples of all the sand near the stations of which the barrel passed. and by means of blowpipe and micro- scope found sand of the station at which it had been emptied and filled. and from this circumstance the thief was discovered and arrested.
