SCRAPS OF SCIENCE.
The prime of lite in a man of regular batits and sound constitution is from 30 to 35 years of age; of a woman, from 24 or 25 to about 40 years of age. One of the most fascinating results of the use of the microscope was the dis- covery of Professor Ehrenberg that a certain rarth or rock in the Barbados is literally composed of minute and beau- tiful "skeletons."
Du Bonnier, a French physician, re- cently drscribed before the Paris Acade- my of Medicine a new method of texting deafness-namely, by applying a tuning fork to the knee or some other part of the hony structure, lle said that a sound ear could not hear the note of the fork. but an ear in which disease bad already made iuroads could perceive it distinctly.

Never Worked and Never Will. Down in Stone county, Mo., 30 miles sonth of Springfield, walled in by Ozark mountains, I'ves Skinch Painter, who, according to a special in the Chteago Record, took a solemn vow nearly 60 years ago that he would never work. Hle declared the belief that the world owes a living to every one brought into it and that work is a useless sin. This remarkable character is to years old. In his own case he has made positive demonstration of his anti-work theory. for he lins never toiled. Yet he lives in absolnte contentment and has the natural bappiness of the early-day In- diane as portrayed in story books. He says he lina never suffered from hunger. bas never felt the need of money and has never weakened in his determina- tior. to abstain from labor. He has lit- erally fished, bunted and fiddled bis way through the world. That is what be said he would do when he was ten years old. Skinch Painter was born in the Ozark mountains. He has never been married. He has brotbers in ad- joining counties who are prosperous farmers. Shinch hasn't seen his kins- men for a score of years, although they live less than 5 miles away
Base Ingratitude.
It is sad to see a tendency in some quarters towards industrial unrest with which professional agitators afflict the work-biest laboring classes, says Hard- ware. Because employment is plentiful on every hand with good pay, they feel as though they can risk weeks of Idle- ness to accomplish some form of coer- tion towards & harassed employer. which a few years ago would have been regarded high treason against the benevolent manufacturer, who fre- quently at that time ran his factory at an inadequate profit, only to keep his workmen together. his wheels at work and the fires of his forges lighted. Gratitude toward the dispenser of em- ployment, the provider of the field of labor, the glad patron of the pay roll, is not a distinguishing characteristic among the restless workmen of these indulgent times.
