REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

To the Citizens of Medfield:

The School Committee herewith submits its annual report for 1944:

This was a year unprecedented for its personnel turnover. The nation employment situation constantly drew teachers from their regular or newly accepted teaching positions into other fields. The period of greatest unrest came through the summer months when those responsible for maintaining school standards were faced with the problem of holding or acquiring experi- enced and serious-minded teachers. Your School Committee, however, felt particularly fortunate in having most of its teach- ers of long-standing loyally remain and fortunate in having a superintendent, Mr. E. Perley Eaton, whose experience and contacts as teacher, principal and superintendent proved ex- tremely valuable in securing capable teachers during this critical time. Medfield is fortunate in its teaching staff of men and women whose endeavor is to prepare their students for voca- tional work or advanced study.

"Released Time" for religious education in our school has been granted to all pupils whose churches request it, providing the parent ask this instruction for their sons and daughters.

A situation of overcrowding developed in the first grade. This class of forty-seven was larger than one teacher could handle efficiently. As a solution, the kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Holder, was employed on a full-time basis to devote half of the school day to helping Mrs MacIvor, the first grade teacher. This over- crowding may prove to be a temporary situation; therefore, the committee feels that any costly expansion would be inexpedient.

The boys in Mr. Freiberg's class took part in the planting of shrubs as a beginning towards landscaping the new school grounds. A blue spruce was donated by the class of 1922 The committee, too, takes pleasure in having a part in this project and feels that not only will these shrubs beautify the school property but that they may enhance the school day memories which each boy and girl cherishes.

Forty women have enrolled in the Vocational Sewing Course for beginners which is sponsored by the Federal and State gov- ernments. The class is conducted by Mrs. Priscilla K. Morton on

90

Tuesdays and Thursdays. The advisory board for this course is: Miss Blanche Marcionette, Mrs Evelyn Byng, and Mrs. Richard Huebener.

The school committee is appreciative of the action taken by the Board of Selectmen to effect adequate lighting on Dale Street. The entire school block, the auditorium, the driveway, and the elementary building are well illuminated so that towns- People can now safely attend evening assemblies in either school.

The school is indebted to Dr. J. E. Goldthwait for gifts of history books and of several large pictures, to Mrs. Percy John- son for many recently published books-biographies, fiction, travel, and current history-and to Mrs. Alexander Allen for a set of United States Presidents' letters and messages. The school library is beginning to grow with much needed reference books for use during study periods.

The committee extends thanks to the Hannah Adams Club for the annual scholarship and to the Parent-Teacher Association for the annual scholarship and the successful inter-class Spelling Bee on December 8.

This year's school expenses have been carefully examined and after estimating a budget for 1945 the committee recommends an appropriation of $44,535.0, and the dog tax.

The school committee wishes to extend sincere thanks to the townspeople for their cooperation and interest in school activities and submits the following school reports which have been con- scientiously compiled for you by Mr. Eaton, Mr. Hartford, Mrs. Brown, Dr. Park, Mrs. Locker, Mrs. Judd, Miss Wyeth, Miss Kincaid, and Mr Freiberg.

Respectfully submitted, MEDFIELD SCHOOL COMMITTEE,

Rodman C. Nowers, Chairman, Edith C. Howlett, Secretary, Harold F. Stevens.

REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

To the School Committee of the Town of Medfield:

I hereby submit my second annual report as Superintendent of Schools for the year ending December 31, 1944. Following this report are several from the various school departments which I hope all will read as they explain in detail the work accomplished in the various fields.

91

Introduction

In the fall of 1943, definite plans were made for this school year.

1. New program of studies in the High School.

2. New Course of Studies in the Elementary School.

3. New books in all departments.

4. A definite testing and guidance program from Grades I to XII.

5. Continued cooperation with the government agency for pre-induction training and help with war-time drives.

6. The establishment of a sound business office.

The year 1944 has been a busy one inasmuch as the war emergency has caused shortages in teachers, in supplies, and in services. In view of this fact we are fortunate to have made progress.

New Program of Studies at Medfield High School

During the winter months the course of studies at the High School (Grades IX, X, XI, XII) was studied. After much discussion and thought a new course was planned. Basically, the high school program was divided into several fields, namely:

1. English, Literature, and Grammar.

2. Mathematics.

3. Social Studies.

4. Business subjects.

5. Foreign Languages.

6. Household Arts.

7. Industrial Arts.

8. The Natural Sciences.

For each one of these eight fields we have secured a teacher well-trained and experienced in this particular subject. In other words, we have an English teacher, a mathematics teacher, a social studies teacher, etc. Thus the pupils have the advantage of expert instruction in their various studies.

Pupils at Medfield High School may select their work from five complete courses: College (Tech.), College (Arts), Commer- cial, General (Girls), General (Boys). Standards have been set which are equivalent to any similar course in any public high school and must be maintained in order for one to graduate.

Course of Studies-Grade I to VIII

From September to January 1943 much emphasis was placed on the courses in Grades I to VIII. Many courses had been omit-

92

ted; some subjects that were found incomplete have been en- larged. A definite program in the following subjects was devel- oped for each grade: reading, history, social studies, geography, arithmetic, spelling, science, health, penmanship, and English grammar. The program in each division is complete, starting in the lower grades, and continuing through Grade VIII. In English grammar, for example, the work starts in Grade II with "Let's Talk" by McKee. In each grade the study is developed until in Grade VIII "Expressing Ideas Clearly" by McKee completes the course.

Each subject starts early in Grade II or Grade III and is developed by a series of textbooks through each grade until the Ninth. There the program is organized in one particular field.

In every subject new books have been purchased and the children of Medfield are indeed fortunate to have such fine illus- trated, well-graded textbooks. I hope that the parents will look over these books from time to time to enjoy them and to realize the advances made in the newer textbooks. In our reading classes in the first grade, at the end of the second month the pupils were reading rapidly and were, doubtless, more advanced this year be- cause of Kindergarten work which has proved to be a definite help in the socialization of our very youngest pupils.
