School Lunches
Ten free lunches are given daily to the children of the needy families by the Salvation Army Fund.
School Census
This year a complete School Census was taken with the help of the Senior Girl Scout Troop. This census taking means that each child sixteen years of age and under in the town was registered.
Number of pupils attending other schools-27.
First-aid kits have been placed in all classrooms in the Elementary building. The Salvation Army Funds have made it possible for all pupils to take gymnastics by supplying rub- ber soled shoes for those who were unable to get them themselves.
First aid treatments were given throughout the year and several pupils were taken home because of being ill at school.
This year we had several cases of Scarlet Fever and Chicken-pox. Careful examination of all classrooms were conducted by the School Doctor and the School Nurse daily and all suspicious cases were excluded from school.
May we take this opportunity to thank the Superintendent, teachers, parents, and others, who have so willingly helped us to carry out a good school health program.
Respectfully submitted, A. RITCHIE STAGG, M.D. School Doctor MADELEINE HARDING, R.N. School Nurse
REPORT OF GIRL'S PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
To the Superintendent of Schools:
I hereby submit my second annual report as Phycisal Education Director.
The purpose of the Physical Education program in Med- field is to provide a wide variety of activities which will insure
92
the full and complete development of all participants. This program will help to maintain physical fitness, achieve social maturity, and solve problems of leisure time.
·
The full program consisted of field hockey, soccer, field- ball, and volleyball in the gym on rainy days.
During the winter, indoor work is concentrated on the following:
Square dancing, tap dancing, folk dancing, modern danc- ing, basketball, badminton, marching, and gymnastics.
During the Spring, the girls take part in track and field events and softball.
In basketball and softball, the girls enjoy the benefits of outside competition. An eight game basketball schedule and a six game softball schedule has been planned. This outside competition will give the girls valuable experience in develop- ing attitudes of good sportsmanship and fair play.
I have endeavored to integrate posture throughout the program as a whole.
As supervisor of the Elementary School, I have set up a full program of activities which include the following: Mime- tics, story play, rhythmical activities, hunting games, relay races, marching and gymnastics, folk dances, athletic games and individual athletic events. These activities essentially influence the physical, mental, and social development of the child.
The elementary grades will give an exhibition to demon- strate what has been accomplished throughout the school year.
I wish to thank all those persons who have given me their cooperation and support.
Respectfully submitted, BARBARA LAMBSON Supervisor of Girl's Physical Education.
MUSIC SUPERVISOR'S REPORT
To the Superintendent of Schools:
My main music objectives on a long term basis are as follows:
To get the pupils to like music; to have an acquaintance- ship with music and understanding of it, so that when they are graduated and leave school they will have been prepared to get a fuller enjoyment of life; they will be able, if they then so wish, to join and participate in their communities choral
93
or other musical groups; they will be able to understand and get a better enjoyment from the better-grade musical radio or concert-hall programs; and at least, they will be able to mix in company when art and music is discussed, without feeling lost or embarrassed; they will be ready, if they go on to college, to join and participate in it's choir, band or orches- tra as the case may be.
At both the elementary and high school level the proper records are used. The tape recorder is used to advantage in our classes.
In closing I might mention that a survey of pupils partici- pating in private instrumental music lessons in our schools numbered about a dozen. The trumpet, clarinet and saxa- phone are the popular instruments. We have one pupil who is a violinist. It would be my wish to have more interested in instrumental music in order that we may develop a band in the future.
Respectfully submitted, SAMUEL SEINIGER Supervisor of Music.
ART SUPERVISOR'S REPORT
To the Superintendent of Schools:
The policy of the art program follows the latest trends, yet employs some emphasis on technique and drill; a sort of middle of the road philosophy.
Drawing is merely a means to an end, and one of the expressions of art, rather than the sole one. Today, art is used to tie all school subjects together, rather than being an isolated subject reserved for the drawing of pretty pictures alone.
Beginning in January, we are making project-murals in each of the first six grades, integrating art with academic subjects.
For Christmas, the cathedral windows shown at the front of the High School Building, were a group project of the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The sixth grade did the largest portion of the work. Although made of tracing and construction paper and colored with crayons, the windows were an original composition, employing the best principals of medieval stained glass construction; and a method that art may be of service to the community.
Respectfully submitted,
DOROTHY WALLACE Supervisor of Art.
