Medfield, Massachusetts December 31, 1946

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen.

I hereby submit my report for the year ending December 31, 1946.

The dogs known to have bitten persons were examined and quarantined. There were no cases of rabies.

The animal inspection found 287 cattle, 616 swine, 5 sheep, 2 goats and 60 horses. The premises were satisfactory.

Respectfully submitted, CARLTON S. CHENEY, Inspector of Animals.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:

Gentlemen:

We herewith submit our report of the Cemetery Depart- ment for the year ending December 31, 1946.

The grass has been mowed, raked and fertilizer applied. The avenues, scraped, weeded and kept in as good a condition as funds, high wages and equipment would allow. A retaining wall on Main Avenue, Old Yard started and a new section in the New Yard plowed under. Theft of the electric clipper head and a new manual lawn mower reported and new locks for the vaults purchased.

We therefore, recommend the sum of $3,500.00 be appro- priated in addition to $180.00 received from the sale of lots.

Respectfully submitted,

PETER PEDERZINI, KENNETH CLARK, JOSEPH A. ROBERTS, Cemetery Commissioners.

ANNUAL LIBRARY REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 1946

The library hours are 2:00 P. M. to 8:30 P. M. daily, ex- cepting Sundays and Holidays. During July and August the hours are: 5:30 P. M. to 8:30 P. M.

In March, Dr. Frank H. Clough resigned from his position as trustee after having been elected in 1913 and serving for thirty-two consecutive years. The Library Board of Trustees

68

accorded Dr. Clough a rising vote of thanks in appreciation and praise of his services. Mr. Richard Lyman, who had left his post as library trustee in 1942 to enlist with the Navy, was elected to fill the unexpired term of one year.

Last year there were 7,507 bound volumes in the library. 243 new books have been purchased in 1946 and over 100 have been donated. Of the new books, 75 are juvenile, 102 are adult fiction and 66 are adult non-fiction. Some of the most popular books at this library for 1946 have been: The Farmer Takes a Wife-Gould; The Egg and I-McDonald; River Road-Keys; Arch of Triumph-Remarque; Before the Sun Goes Down- Howard; Turquoise Seton; The King's General-Du Maurier; My Lady of Cleves-Barnes; Starling of the White House- Sugrue; I Love Miss Tillie Bean-Chase; The Autobiography of William Allen White; This Side of Innocence-Caldwell; No Time for Tears-Hughes; Top Secret-Ingersoll; Peace of Mind-Liebman; Snake Pit-Ward; Anatomy of Peace-Reeves; Unforseen-MacArdle; We Happy Few-Howe; Spoonhandle- Moore; Britannia News-Sharp; I Chose Freedom-Kravchenko; Driftwood Valley-Stanley-Fletcher; Salem Frigate-Jennings; Through Purple Glass-Osborne; The Dark Wood-Weston; The Miracle of the Bells-Janney; White Dress-Eberhart; The Hollow-Christie; The Happy Profession-Sedgwick; Green Grass of Wyoming-O'Hara; B. F.'s Daughter-Marquand; Happy the Land-Rich.

There has been an average daily circulation of 43 plus books. Through the year, 12,949 books have been circulated: 9,788 to adults and 3,161 to young people.

Magazines have become more popular. The following is a list of the periodicals to be found on the library tables: America, American Girl, American Magazine, Better Foods, Better Homes and Gardens, Child Life, Cosmopolitan, Flower Grower, Fly- ing, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Harper's, House Beautiful, Hygeia, Life, Mademoiselle, National Geographic, Parents" Magazine, Photoplay, Popular Homecraft, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Saturday Review of Literature, Scientific American, Time, Travel, Wee Wisdom, Red Book, Boys' Life, Seventeen, Ladies' Home Journal, American Home, Newsweek, Library Journal, Reader's Digest.

There have been 129 new borrowers this year; four are from neighboring towns and register by paying two dollars per year for the borrowing privileges.

There have been donations of books, plants and magazines. The members of the Board of Trustees on behalf of the towns- people extend thanks to: Mrs. G. B. Dabney, Mrs. James White, Mrs. Clyde Turner, Miss Ethel Hersey, Miss Phyllis Lucy, Mr. Phillip Dennett, Mrs. Newell Leighton, Mrs. Harry Young, Mrs. Edward Lombard, The Second Congregational Sunday School and Mrs. Paul H. Richardson.

69

The steps to the main entrance which were in very poor condition have been entirely replaced.

The privilege of borrowing non-fiction books from the State Division of Public Libraries has been used more extensively this year, as there have been more requests for academic reference books. This service is very satisfactory; requested books are sent to us within one or two weeks and may be kept for one month. The librarians are pleased to extend this serv- ice at any time.

The Massachusetts Department of Education offers exten- sion courses to those interested in further education. These courses may be taken for credits. The written examinations may be taken at the library and witnessed by your librarian. Please ask for information concerning these courses if you are interested.

During the summer a "story hour" was held for children in the first three grades of school. These "hours" were held daily at the library at 11:00 A. M. for four weeks. Only eleven children attended, but they had happy times during some of our most trying warm weather.

Respectfully submitted,

EDITH HOWLETT, ANNE C. DONLAN,

REPORT OF THE WATER DEPARTMENT

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:

Gentlemen:

We herewith submit our report for the Water Department for the year ending December 31, 1946.

The business of this Department increased very greatly during the year as shown by the following figures, and is ex- pected to continue increasing as indicated, due to residential building now under way:

A six inch water main was laid in Nebo Street during 1946 at a cost of slightly less than $5,000, of which cost 60% has been borne by the abutting owner. Three new services were connected to this main in 1946, and others are expected at an early date.

Due to increasing amounts paid out for the use of private cars and trucks, we believe the time has come when it would be a measure of economy for the town to purchase a light truck for the use of the Water and Sewerage Department, and we recommend that this be done.

Mr. Ira F. Penniman tendered his resignation as Super- intendent at the close of the year, for reasons of ill health. It was with great regret that the Board was forced to accept his resignation after twenty-six years of efficient and unstint- ing service to this town. Mr. Harry Leighton has been ap- pointed Superintendent in his place.

As indicated above, we ask for an appropriation of $9,200 for the year 1947.

Respectfully submitted, WILLIAM B. FROTHINGHAM IRA F. PENNIMAN MYRON H. SMITH Water and Sewerage Board.

REPORT OF THE SEWER DEPARTMENT

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:

Gentlemen:

We herewith submit our report for the Sewer Department for the year ending December 31, 1946.

Regular attention has been given to raking and cleaning the sewer beds, mowing grass on the embankments, and clean- ing the collecting well.

One new house sewer was added to the system in 1946.

The sewer system as a whole is in excellent condition. During 1947 we plan to correct for unevenness in the beds, due to settlement, by adding a small amount of fresh sand from the adjacent town gravel pit.

We ask for an appropriation of $1200 for the year 1947.

Respectfully submitted,

WILLIAM B. FROTHINGHAM IRA F. PENNIMAN MYRON H. SMITH Water and Sewerage Board.
