The Trustees of the Medfield Memorial Library respect- fully submit the following report for the year 1945:
The Library is open daily from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. except during the months of July and August, when the hours are from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The following statistics may be of interest:
Circulation-adult, 10,657; juvenile, 3,779; total 14,436-daily average 54 books.
Books purchased-adult, 208; juvenile, 68-total 276.
Books owned at Dec. 31-adult, 5,765; juvenile, 1,436-total, 7,201.
New borrowers-100; year's borrowers-1,012.
The following magazines are subscribed to :- America, American Cookery, American Girl, American Magazine, At- lantic Monthly, Better Homes & Gardens, Boys' Life, Child Life, Cosmopolitan, Current History, Flower Grower, Flying & Industrial Aviation, Fortune, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Harper's Magazine, House Beautiful, Hygeia, Life, Mademoiselle, National Geographic, Parents Magazine, Photo- play, Popular Homecraft, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Reader's Digest, Red Book, Saturday Review of Literature, Scientific American, Seventeen, Time, Travel, and Wee Wis- dom. Current copies of these are kept on the tables and all other numbers may be borrowed.
Two donations of special interest were given by Mrs. Pace in memory of her son who died at Pearl Harbor. The bookplate reads "In memoriam to Joseph W. Pace, Pearl Har- bor, Dec. 7, 1941. He died in war that we may live in peace." Mrs. Pace suggests that other books be donated to the Library in memory of those who lost their lives in this war. The Library Board is happy to endorse this suggestion and will be grateful for any future donations.
The Library has received gifts of books, magazines, and plants from Mrs. Henry E. Young, Jr., Mrs. Margaret Peters, Mr. Albert Tuttle, The Hannah Adams Club, Mrs. Arthur Mann, The Medfield Girl Scout Council, Mrs. Clarence Boyce, Mr. Thomas Whiteside, Dr. Henry Benjamin, Mrs. Clarke Man- ning, Mrs. James White, Mrs. J. We herewith submit our report for the Sewer Depart- ment for the year ending December 31, 1945.
The beds have been raked and cleaned regularly, and the sludge carried to the dump. The grass on the dikes was

mowed before going to seed in order to prevent the growth | of weeds in the beds. The collecting well has been cleaned weekly to prevent objectionable odors.
The use of the new sewer rods has prevented trouble from stoppages which have appeared from time to time in the past.
To keep the sewer system in good condition, we ask for an appropriation of '$1200 for 1946.

REPORT OF THE WATER DEPARTMENT
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen:
We herewith submit our report for the Water Department for the year ending December 31, 1945.
During the year four new water services were installed.
We recommend the construction of a 6 inch water main on Nebo Street from Main Street for a length of 1300 feet to a new private road on the property of Dr. Joel E. Goldthwaite. We are assured of two new services at once with the proba- bility of four more in the immediate future.
In accordance with our usual practice, the mains have been periodically flushed out to prevent objectionable color and odor in the dead ends, when necessary.

Gentlemen:
The Fire Engineers hereby submit their report for the year ending December 31, 1945.
There were 61 alarms classified as follows: Brush and Grass, 36; Buildings, 11; Automobiles, 7; Chimneys, 2; False, 5.
During the year we have had installed a new air compressor and new horns to replace the old one which was worn out. We also purchased a time clock which blows the test at noon and the curfew at 9 p. m.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen:
Owing to the shortage of experienced help during the war years, machinery and maintenance have been neglected.
We therefore, recommend the sum of $3,500.00 be appro- priated in addition to the amount received from the sale of lots and in addition to the above, a sum of $500.00 for the erec-

tion of a retaining wall of about fifty feet (50') on Main Avenue, Old Yard.

DOG OFFICER'S REPORT
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen:
I hereby respectfully submit my report as Dog Officer for the year ending December 31, 1945. There were 54 complaints received and investigated.
The following cases were taken care of:
10 Dogs found and turned over to their owners
5 Stray dogs taken to Animal Rescue League
9 Dogs injured by automobiles on highway
