Grand Rapids branch of the former road with the Main line. Thus trains leave in 5 different directions, making it quite a rail- road center. It is go miles north of New Buffalo, 20 south of Grand Haven, 25 south- west of Grand Rapids, and 23 northwest of Allegan. The place was settled by a colony of Hollanders, and still this nationality large- ly predominates. The first settlement was made in 1846. In 1867 Holland became a city. In IS7! it was almost destroyed by fire, over 300 buildings being consumed. It has since been rebuilt, however, in a more substantial manner. Holland is the seat of Hope Col- lege, an educational enterprise supported in part by the board of education of the Re- formed (Dutch) Church. The manufacturing interests include 2 large tanneries, 2 flour- ing mills, 2 planing mills, I foundry, 2 saw mills, I stave factory, and some artisans' shops, 3 churches, Dutch Reformed, Metho- dist and Episcopal, 4 newspapers, the News, De Hope, De Hollander and De Grondwet. Holland has a good natural harbor, an appro- priation for the improvement of which has been made by the general government. A brisk trade is carried on in cordwood, hem. lock bark, lumber, etc. Stage to Sauga- tuck daily. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American and United States. William Verbeek, postmaster.

HOLLY.
A flourishing village in the northeast cor- ner of Oakland county, located at the inter. section of the F. & P. M. Ry and the D. & M. R. R. It is in the township of Holly, 47 miles from Detroit and 91 from Toledo.
The country surrounding Holly produces large quantities of grain, fruits, wool, poultry etc., which find a ready market in the village and are shipped to the larger cities. The flour mills of Mr. M. Stiff, who manufactures the celebrated Holly flour, turn out from 30,000 to 40,000 barrels annually. There are also i furniture factory, I planing mill, 2 foundries and several carriage and wagon shops. Good water power is furnished by the Shiawassee river which flows through the village.
There are good public schools and four churches, Baptist, Methodist, Christian and Presbyterian. Two banks; 3 hotels and a live local paper, the Holly Register. Popu- lation about 2000. A rising village of about 300 people, in the township of Holton and northeast corner of Muskegon county. It is a station on the C. & M. L. S. R. R., Big Rapids branch, 17 miles northeast of Muskegon and 39 southwest of Big Rapids. Holton was set- tled in 18;0. It has a Methodist church, a public school building, a large steam saw mill and 2 hotels. Lumber, long timber and railroad ties are shipped. Western Union telegraph and American express. A postoffice and small place in Monroe township, Newaygo county, Traverse Road, on the Big Rapids branch of the C. & M. L. S. R. R, 5 miles south, is its railroad point. HOMER.
A thriving village of 1200 inhabitants, is located in Homer township, in the southeast corner of Calhoun county. It lies at the point of intersection of the Air Line divi. sion of the M. C. R. R., and the Lansing branch of the L. S. & M. S. Ry., 23 miles
west of Jackson, 13 southeast of Marshall, 46 south of Lansing, 19 northwest of Hills- dale, and 99 from Detroit. Homer, owing to to its excellent railroad facilities and the ferti- lity of the surrounding country, is a fast grow- ing and prosperous village. Wheat and other grains are largely shipped. It is claimed that the quality of the wheat grown in the town- ship of Homer is not excelled in the north- west. The St. Joseph and Kalamazoo rivers flow near the village, furnishing sufficient wa- ter power for 2 flouring mills and i saw mill. There are also 2 planing mills and I foundry and machine shop, run by steam. The village contains a good Union school and 3 churches --- Episcopal, Methodist and Pres- byterian. Several fine substantial buildings have been erected during the past year, The place supports 2 banks, 2 hotels, and a weekly newspaper, the Index. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union.
