MARSHALL.
A thriving little city of 5,000 inhabitants, is the county seat of Calhoun county, it is located on the Kalamazoo river, and is a point on the M. C. R. R., 108 miles west of Detroit, 32 west of Jackson, and 177 east of Chicago
The site for a village was selected here in 1830, by a colony from the State of New York, and for several years the settlement experienced a remarkable degree of prosper- ity. In 1836, however, a period of reaction set in, which continued until IS44, when with the completion of the railroad to this point a new era of improvement began.
Marshall was incorporated as a city in 1859, and the present population numbers about 5,000; a valuable water power is de. rived from the river here, and considerable manufacturing is carried on, there being 5
flouring mills, a wind mill and pump factory, a large hoe manufactory, 2 planing mills, 2 machine shops and a foundry. There are 3 banks, the First National, capital $200,000 ; the National Bank of Michigan, capital $100,000 ; and the National City Bank, capi- tal $100,000.
Two live newspapers are published here, the Statesman and the Expositor. The city is lighted with gas. The fire department consists of a steamer and two hand engines, supplied with water from 22 artesian wells, located in different parts of the city.
There are 10 churches in Marshall : - Christian, Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational, Evangelical Association, Lutheran, Catholic and African Methodist. There is also a Spiritual associa- tion. In 1873 the Presbyterians erected a $60,000 church edifice. The public schools comprise a $60,000 central building --- one of the finest in the State-and 4 ward schools. There are over 1,300 scholars enrolled, and 20 teachers employed at an aggregate of $8,500 for salaries.
In 1874 the county erected here a new court house, one of the finest in central Michigan. Its cost was over $50,000. Tele- graph, Western Union. Express, American. Samuel J. Burpee, postmaster.
