A village of 125 souls on the Mackinaw division of the M. C. R. R., is the county seat of Ogemau county. It is 54 miles above Bay City, 162 from Detroit, and is on the west branch of Rifle river whence it has good unimproved water power. WESTON.
A village of about 400 inhabitants on the line of the C. & S. C. Ry in Fairfield town- ship, Lenawee county, 12 miles south of Adrian, the judicial seat, and So southwest of Detroit. It was first settled in 1872 and is a progressive village. Flour, cheese, lum- ber, staves, headings, etc. are manufactured, and with oats, corn, wheat, and live stock are shipped. WHITEHALL.
A flourishing incorporated village of 1500 inhabitants, is pleasantly situated on the east shore of White lake, a beautiful body of water 5 miles in length and varying from I to 2 miles in breadth, formed by a widening of White river near its mouth. This lake affords one of the best and safest harbors on the western shore, the channel having been made of sufficient depth to admit the largest steamers. The village contains 6 saw mills, 3 shingle mills and I planing mill, and there are some 20 other saw and shingle mills located at various points along the shore of the lake, the whole having a capacity of 100,000,000 feet of lumiber, 75,000,000 shingles and 20,000,000 1.th.
The C. & M. L. S. R. R. passes through the village, by which it is 15 miles north of Muskegon, 28 south of Pentwater, and 142 north of New Buffalo. It is 5 miles inland from lake Michigan, and is in Oceana town. ship, in the northern part of Muskegon county. The place was platted in 1859 as Mears, by which name it was known until 1867, when it became incorporated as White- hall. It ha, 5 or more churches, the denominations represented being Baptist, Congregational, Episcopal, Wesleyan and Episcopal Methodist, Catholic and Lutheran. A small place in Oakland county, about 10 miles west of Pontiac. The postoffice is known as Ox Bow.
WHITE OAK.
A postoffice in White Oak township, Ing- ham county, 16 miles east of Mason, the county seat, and II south of Leroy station, on the D. L. & N. R. R. There are 2 saw mills and one cider mill here. WHITE PIGEON
Is in the southwestern part of St. Joseph county, on the main line of the L. S. & M. S. Ry, at the southern terminus of the Kala- mazoo division. Bythis route it is 164 miles from Detroit, 120 from Chicago, 123 from Toledo, and 95 from Grand Rapids. The population of the village is about 1, 200. It has a woolen factory, a sash and door fac. tory, a flouring mill, a wagon factory, 5 churches-Baptist, German Reform, Lu- theran, Methodist and Presbyterian - 3 hotels, a bank, and several well stocked general stores.
