SAULT DE STE MARIE.
The county seat of Chippewa county, an incorporated village of about 1500 inhabi- tants, situated on St. Mary's river, the out- let of lake Superior, abreast of the famous falls or rapids. It is about 350 miles from Detroit, and 170 cast of Marquette. The great object of interest at the Sault is the ship canal, by means of which vessels overcome the rapids. This was completed in 1955. but the increasing trade with the Lake Supe. rior country has already outgrown its capacity and a much more capacious lift lock is now

being constructed alongside of the old canal. It is excavated in the solid rock, and will be arranged to receive two of the largest vessels and transfer them at one lift from the lower to the higher level, or vice versa. The old locks take but one vessel and two lifts are re- quired. Both sets of locks will be employed.
Fort Brady is located just below the vil- lage, and here a small garrison is usually kept. There is little or no manufacturing carried on here, though the unlimited water power offers rare advantages. On the Canadian side of the river, however, a large flouring mill has been erected, to be stocked with Minnesota wheat brought down from Duluth to be manufactured here for the eastern market. If this experiment proves success- ful it will doubtless be extended, and the Sault may in time rival Rochester N. V., as the "four city" of the Union. Two saw mills are the extent of its manufactures at present. It hos 5 hotels, a number of stores, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, and some other business and social interests. Lumber, furs and fish are shipped. Telegraph -- Western Union. Mail semi- weekly, during summer, and tri-weekly, via Mackinaw, in the winter. Edward Ashmun, postmaster.
