A village of some 300 inhabitants, is lo- cated on the S. H. division of the M. C R. R., 16 miles west of Kalamazoo, and 25 east of South Haven. It is in Van Buren county, 12 miles northeast of Paw Paw, the county seat. Kendall is an enterprising vil- lage, and has manufactories of chairs, staves, broom handles, brick and lumber. It has also a good public school building and a Methodist church. The soil in the vicinity is sandy and productive. The timber chiefly oak, though there is some pine. Locality settled about 1864. A village located on the Saginaw division of the M. C. R. R., in Sciota township, near the western edge of Shiawassee county. It is 12 miles southwest of Owosso, 16 from Corunna, the county seat, and 15 northeast of Lansing. The surrounding country, though somewhat rough, comprises good farming lands. Grain and live stock, with some flour and lumber form the shipments. There are 3 churches- Baptist, Congregational and Methodist -- a grist mill, a saw mill, a Union school building and a number of good stores .. Laingsburg was settled in 1836, by Peter Laing. LAKE LINDEN.
A village of some 600 inhabitants, is lo- cated on the west bank of Torch lake, an arm of Portage lake. in Schoolcraft township, in the north of Houghton county. It is the southern terminus of the Hecla & Torch Lake railroad, a line five and one-half miles long (four-foot gauge), built and owned by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. for the conveyance of their ores from the mine to the stamps, which are located at Lake Lin- den, for the advantage derived from the abundance of water over what would be en. joyed at a point nearer the mine. There are two stamp mills, both fitted up with Ball's stamps and the most approved appliances throughout. These mill are being enlarged
and new water works, with greatly increased capacity, added. The amount of copper produced by the Calumet & Hecla Mine and stamped at this mill during IS75, was 13,155 tons. The gross earnings of the company for the same year approximating the enor. mous amount of five million dollars. The place also contains a saw mill, 2 churches, Catholic and Methodist, and a public school. Settled 1867. Stage to Houghton daily, dis- tance 12 miles. Mail tri-weekly. A thrifty village of some Soo inhabitants in Cato township, in the northern part of Montcalm county, 20 miles northwest of Stanton, the county seat, and 45 north- east of Grand Rapids. Its present railroad point is Howard City, at the junction of the D. L. & N. and the G. R. & 1. railroads, II miles southwest. The Chicago, Saginaw and Canada railroad is graded to lakeview, and will give it a direct outlet. The place has mills for the manufacture of flour, lum- ber, shingles, sash, doors, castings, staves, wagons, etc. There are 2 churches -Metho- dist and United Brethren, a weekly news- paper-the Citizen, and various other inter- ests. LAKEVILLE.
A small village or hamlet in the township of Addison, Oakland county, located at the head of Stony creek, a stream affording water power for a flouring mill. There are also a foundry and a sawmill in the place. The country around is rolling and adapted to agriculture. Population 125. Stage to Rochester, 12 miles south, semi-weekly. LAMONT.
A considerable village in the township of Tallmage, Ottawa county. It is on the Grand river 20 miles east of Grand Haven. Coop- ersville on the D. & M.R. R, 5 miles north is its shipping station by rail, Lamont is in a timbered country and in an exceed- ingly productive fruit growing region. Fruit, flour, butter, lumber and wood are shipped. There are 2 churches, Methodist and Con- gregational, I saw mill, I planing mill and 1 hotel. The first town meeting was held in 1833. Present population 450. Stage to Cooperville and mail daily. R. LA MOTTE.
A postoffice and four corners in La Motte township, in the western part of Sanilac county, 3812 miles northwest from Lexing. ton. The shipments are lumber and shingles principally. Population 150. Imlay City, 28 miles south, is . its shipping station. It has a stage west to Wahjemega and south to Imlay City daily, and a daily mail. Nelson R. Wells, postmaster.

LANGSTON.
A village containing about 300 souls, in Pine township, in the west part of Mont- calm county, 10 miles from Stanton the county seat. Gowen on the D. L. & N. R. R. 4 miles south is the nearest railroad point, but shipments are usually made via Greene- ville 10 miles south. The place is situated on Flat river which affords considerable water power. The leading articles of export are lumber, lath, shingles and logs. Mail is received daily. Rufus Sprague, postmaster.
