miles west of Detroit, 93 east of Chicago, 47 southwest of Kalamazoo, and 10 north of South Bend, Ind. The population at present num- bers about 4, 800. The city lies at the head of navigation, on the St. Joseph river, and has excellent water power privileges.
The enterprise of this place is seen in its gas works, its fine rows of business houses, and its large iron bridge connecting the western side of the river with the main town. Though not the county seat, Niles is by far the largest and most important town in the county of Berrien. Its manufacturing in- terests are numerous, including 4 large flour- ing mills, I pulp mill, I paper mill, I saw mill, 2 extensive carriage shops, 2 foundries and machine shops, I woolen mill, an Alden evaporating house and several industrial in- terests of minor importance. Live stock and fruit form important shipments, Niles being the center of a region of country specially adapted to grazing and fruit cul- ture.
The educational wants of the city have not been neglected, as would seem from the fact that they have a fine Union and four ward school houses, giving employment to 19 teachers.
Eight churches, Presbyterian, Episcopa- lian, Methodist, Catholic. Baptist, Lutheran, and two colored churches, Methodist and Baptist, afford a Sabbath home for church going people.
The press of Niles consists of the Repub- .lican, the Democrat, and the Independent, a .democratic sheet. Niles was settled in 182S, and took its name from Hezekiah Niles, the editor of Niles' Register, a famous publica- tion in its day. A line of stages communi- cates with Berrien Springs and St. Joseph daily, distance 12 and 32 miles respectively. Telegraph, Atlantic & Pacific and Western Union. Express, American. Evan J. Bonine, postmaster.
