REED CITY.
An incorporated village of 1000 inhabit- ants in Richmond township, in the southwest corner of Osceola county. It is located at the crossing of the F. & P. M. and the G. R. & I. R. R. and is 69 miles north of Grand Rapids, 90 west of Saginaw, 4S west of Ludington and ISS northwest of Detroit. Pine and hardwood timber are abundant in the vicinity and lumber manufacturing is the principal interest. Besides its saw mills, planing mills, etc., Reed City has 2 flouring mills, a foundry and machine shop, a carriage and agricultural implement manu- factory, 2 churches, 3 hotels, the National and the Heath Houses being the best. Sever- al handsome brick buildings have lately been erected and the town is improving rapidly. The Hersey river affords water power. Ex- press, American and United States. Tele- graph, Western Union. A postoffice and station on the F. & P. M. Ry, in Lake county, 4 miles west of Baldwin City, the county seat, and 27 east of Luding- ton.
REPUBLIC.
An important mining village in the town- ship of Ely, Marquette county. It is on the Michigamme river, and is the terminus of the Republic branch of the M. H. & O. R. R., 37 miles west of Marquette. It is the loca- tion of the famous Republic iron mine, the richest and most productive of Marquette county. The mine, all surface work, is very extensive, and the ore produced ranks in the highest class for purity and uniformity. The mine was only opened iu 1872, when the completion of the railroad gave facilities for shipment, and the village has no more an- cient origin, yet it now numbers about 1,000 inhabitants. It contains several stores, a Methodist church, a hotel, school, etc. Telegraph, Northwestern.

A village of 350 inhabitants on the Mans- field, Coldwater & Lake Michigan railroad, 15 miles northwest of Battle Creek. This road is not operated as yet. Richland is in the township of Richland, Kalamazoo coun- ty, 9 miles northeast of Kalamazoo, the county seat, its present shipping station. It is situated on Gull prairie, a beautiful tract of valuable farming lands, 6000 acres in ex- tent. Grain, hay, stock and wool are the staple products. The village contains manu- factories of patent wind mills, washing ma- chines, cider and vinegar. There are 2 churches-Presbyterian and Methodist. Daily mail. P. H. Gilkey, postmaster.

A brisk village of 1,000 inhabitants, 34 of a mile west of Ridgeway station, the inter- section of the G. T. and the Michigan Air line railways, in Richmond township, Ma- comb county. It is 17 miles northeast of Mount Clemens, 14 west of St. Clair, and 40 above Detroit. Richmond was settled in 1836, is in a level farming country, and con- tains a flouring mill, a planing mill, a woolen mill, a stave mill and a foundry. There are 4 churches-Baptist, Congregational, Metho- dist and Free Methodist. A newspaper, the Herald, is published weekly. Grain, hops and live stock are the leading farm products shipped. RILEY CENTER.
A small hamlet in the town of Riley, St. Clair county, on Belle river, in a pleasantly rolling country, which produces grain, hay, wool, cheese, butter, eggs, pork, and beef. The place has a population of about 100, and is 23 miles southeast of Port Huron and 7 south of Emmet station, on the C. & L. H. R. R. It has a semi-weekly mail. M. Elenwood, postmaster.
