L'ANSE.
A village of about Soo inhabitants and the county seat of the new county of Baraga, is situated at the western terminus of the M.H.& O.R.R, near the head of L'Anse bay. It is 63 miles southwest of Marquette and 28 south. east of Houghton. The place takes its name from the beautiful bay upon which it is sit-
nated and was named L'Anse, "The bay, " by the early French discoverers, by the way of pre-eminence from its being the best, safest and most beautiful harbor on the lake. It was settled in 1871, a short time before the completion of the railroad to this point. The village contains an extensive iron dock from which all the product of the more western mines of the iron region is shipped. There is also a dock for merchandise.
The other interests are a bank, 2 hotels, several stores, good schools and ample church acommodations. There are several slate and brown stone quarries in the neighborhood of the village. Fall river which here empties into the bay, furnishes abundant unimproved water power. A boat plies daily between L'Anseand Houghton. The finest whitefish in western waters are caught here, and the brooks and streams abound in speckled trout. Iron, slate, lumber and fish make up the leading shipments. LANSING.
The capital of the State of Michigan, a flourishing city of about S,ooo inhabitants, is situated in the northwest corner of Ingham county, near the longitudinal center of the lower peninsula of the State. Railroads radiate from the city in 7 different directions. Southeast, the D. L. & N. R. R. connects it with Detroit, 85 miles distant; south, the Saginaw division of the M. C. R. R. con- nects it with Jackson, 37 miles, and the L. S. & M. S. Ry. with Albion and Jones- ville, 37 and 59 miles distant, respectively ; southwest, the C. & L. HI R. R. connects it with" Battle Creek, 45 miles ; northwest, the D. L. & N. R. R. connects it with Ionia, 3S iniles, and northeast the Saginaw division of the M. C. R. R. with Saginaw and Bay City, 64 and 79, and the C. & N. E. R. R. with Flint and Port Huron, 50 and 116 miles dis- tant, respectively.
In 1848 the first meeting of the legislature was held here, the site having within a year been cleared, the state house built, and suffi- cient accommodations provided for boarding the members Lansing was incorporated as a city in 1859, but it was not till 1863 that it was accessible by rail. It has since grown rapidly, and bids fair to become a place of considerable commercial importance, aside from its prestige as being the seat of govern- ment.
THE STATE BUILDINGS.
The legislature of 1871 voted an appro- priation of $1,200,000 for the erection of a new State capitol, and this structure is now (1877) in an advanced state of progress, it is wholly of stone, brick and iron, and as nearly fire proof as possible. It is in the palladian style of architecture, and is 345 feet in length, 191 feet in width, and 265 feet in height to the top of the lantern. A rotunda and dome occupy the center of the building. The basement will be used for the State armory and for storage purposes.
The first floor will be fitted up for the vari- ous State offices; the second and third stor- ies will be thrown together in part for the hall of representatives, senate chamber, ex- ecutive apartments and State library, part of the third story being used for the Supreme Court room. It is to be ready for occupancy in IS78.
The State library contains over 30,000 volumes, and is in a flourishing condition. The State Reform School is located on a farm of 224 acres, just northeast of the city, it bas at present (1877), 256 inmates. The State Agricultural College is located 3 miles east of Lansing. It had an endowment from Congress of $240,000 acres of land, the greater portion of which remains unsold. The number of students for 1877 is 164.
OTHER INSTITUTIONS.
Lansing boasts 15 churches of the various denominations common in this State. It has likewise an admirable school system. A new high school building has recently been erected at a cost of $60,oco.
The Odd Fellows of the State here main- tain an extensive institute for an orphan asy lum and home for indigent members of th order, the value of the property being ab. $100,000.
Valuable mineral waters are found here. Among the hotels is the Lansing House, a large and first-class hotel in every respect.
The newspapers are the Republican, pub- lished semi-weekly, one of the most carefully edited papers in the State, and the Journal, an excellent democratic weekly. The State printing office of W S George & Co, is one of the most extensive and complete in the northwest.
BUSINESS INTERESTS.
The Grand river upon which the city is situated is susceptible of considerable im- provement as a water power. The manufac- turing interests include 3 sash and blind fac- tories an extensive chair factory, a bending factory, 2 large coopering establishments, 2 agricultural implement factories, a large machine shop, etc.
There are 2 national banks, the Second, capital $50,000, and the Lansing, capital $100,000, also 2 private banks.
There are several exclusively wholesale houses in Lansing. The city his several fine blocks of stores, a good opera house, many handsome residences and is lighte l with gas. Si splendid tron bridges (5 of which were erected in 1575) cross the river at various points. The bonded debt of the city, includ- ing the aid voted to railroadls, is $171,500. Telegraph, Atlantic & Pacific and Western Union. Express, American and United States. S. D. Bingham, postmasier.
