A thriving village of 800 or more inhabi- tants, located on the Bay City division of the M. C. R. R., in Shelby township, Ma- comb county, 24 miles north of Detroit, and 9 west of Mount Clemens, the seat of justice. It is on Clinton river, and on the line of the old Clinton & Kalamazoo canal, which though not now used for navigation purpos- es, affords a magnificent water power, upo.1 which 2 flouring mills are maintained. The place was settled as early as 1817, and was years ago, connected with Detroit by a rail- way, known as the Detroit & Shelby R. R. The place contains a pulp factory, 2 grist mills, 3 churches, Catholic, Congregational and Methodist, a good hotel, the Exchange, and a weekly newspaper, the Utica Sentinel. A village of 625 population, in Penn township, Cass county, 512 miles east of Cassopolis. It is on the Air Line division of the M. C. R. R., 20 miles west of Centre- ville, and 160 from Detroit. The industries of Vandalia comprise I flouring mill, I saw mill, I handle factory, I foundry and machine shop, I carriage shop, etc. The public buildings consist of a good substantial school building and I church, Christian. The Methodists and Friends or Quakers have organizations, and contemplate building shortly. It has a bank, a good hotel and various other essentials to a thriving and progressive village. A good prairie and oak-opening country surrounds it, and grain principally is cultivated. In the way of manufactures, Vicksburg has 2 planing mills, a saw mill, 2 grist mills, a handie factory, 2 churches-Methodist and Congregational-3 hotels, a semi-weekly newspaper, the Monitor (independent), and several good stores. A hamlet in Mason county; 7 miles north- east of Ludington and 5 from Amber station on the F. & P. M. Ry. It is on the Little Au Sable river, and has one saw mill. Pop- ulation 50. The place was first settled in 1864 by N. L. Bird. Wheat, hay and pota- toes are grown, and with tan bark and lum- ber are shipped. Mail once a week. N. L. Bird, deputy postmaster.

A small village containing 60 inhabitants, in the township of same name, Cass County, Io miles north of Cassopolis, and 8 south of Decatur. VRIESLAND.


A dutch settlement in Zeeland township, Ottawa county, on the Grand Rapids branch of the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 30 miles south- east of Grand Haven, the county seat, 16 southwest of Grand Rapids and S above Holland. It was settled in 1847 and now has 250 inhabitants. Agriculture is the leading interest of the community and grain, beef, pork, potatoes, butter and eggs form the shipments. Mail daily. Henry Bosch, postmaster.
