HOMESTEAD.
A lumber village in the township of Homestead, Benzie county, 5 miles west of Benzonia. the county seat, and 24 southwest of Traverse City, the nearest railroad ap. proach. There are two saw mills, a grist mill and a shingle manufactory here. Lum- ber, shingles and sugar maple, are ship- ped. Tri-weekly stages communicate with Traverse City and Frankfort. HOPE.
A postoffice and small village in Hope township, Midland county. It was settled in 1867, and is in a timber section of coun- try, lumber and shingles being the only shipments. Midland, the county seat, is 13 miles south, and Averill's station, on the F. & P. M. Ry, 612 miles. A mail is received by stage from the latter place weekly. Marshall Carr, postmaster.

A station on the C & M L S R R, in Lee township, Allegan county, 15 miles southwest of Allegan and 12 northeast of South Haven. Settled, 1871. Population 40. Exports, railroad ties, cord wood and fruit. Mail daily. Ransom Snell, postmaster.
HORTON.
Is a postoffice in Hanover township, Jack- son county. It is also a station on the Fort Wayne, Jackson & Saginaw R R, 10 miles southwest of Jackson. The name of the village is Baldwins. Population 400. In- corporated in 1872. Among the improve- ments are a grist mill, planing mill, Metho- dist and Universalist churches and a Union School. HOUGHTON.
The county seat of Houghton county, a thrifty incorporated village of 2,500 inhabi- tants, is located on the south shore of Port- age lake, 10 miles from lake Superior on the

west, as reached by the new canal opened through from Portage lake, 14 from the mouth of Portage river, and 30 by water a little west of north from L'Anse its near- est railroad point. By water it is about 90 miles northwest from Marquette. By rail and stage it is 106 miles. The village is located on quite a steep hill side, and being almost isolated by a wide expanse of wilder- ness; from settlements to the south, the place presents to the eye of the stranger a a peculiar aspect from the almost entire ab- sence of vehicles in the streets. The village was first settled in 1854, and was incorpo- rated in IS6r. It contains the court house and jail, 3 churches, Methodist, Episcopal and Catholic, a bank, 4 hotels, of which the
Douglass House is quite a first class estab. lishment, a large union school building, an excellent weekly newspaper, a copper rolling mill (capital $250,000), 2 stamp mills, 2 steam saw mills, a safety fuse factory and some other institutions. A ferry con- nects it with Hancock, just opposite. Both places are within the bounds of the mineral range of Keweenaw point, a strip from 4 to 6 miles in width extending in a northeasterly and southwesterly direction through the en- tire length of the Keweenaw peninsula, and beyond indefinitely. This mineral range is very rich in copper, and all the Lake Super- ior copper mines are included within its bounds. Of the mines located in the imme. diate vicinity of Houghton on the south side

HOUGHTON LAKE.
The county seat of Roscommon county is a place of 20 population, settled in 1873. It is situated on Roscommon lake, 28 miles from Roscommon Station on the Mackinaw division of the M. C. R. R., its nearest rail- road point, and 193 from Detroit. Lumber- ing is the only industry and the place derives its chief importance from being the county seat. A line of stages runs to Farwell semi- weekly, distance about 40 miles. Mail four times a week. H1. H. Woodruff, postmaster.
HOWARD CITY.
A prosperous incorporated village of S years standing, is located at the intersection of the D. L. & N. with the G. R. &. I. R. R. and at the present northern terminus of the former road. It is in the township of Rey- nold-, in the northwest corner of Montcalm
county, 35 miles north of Grand Rapids, 41 north of Ionia, 79 northwest of Lansing and 164 from Detroit. The surrounding country comprises both farming and pine timber . lands. Wheat, hay and potatoes are the staple agricultural products. Tamarach river furnishes good water power and lumber and shingles are largely manufactured; there being 10 shingle mills, 4 saw mills, 3 planing inills, 2 sash and blind factories and I stave factory, I machine shop-and 2 flouring mills in the place and immediate vicinity.
The village contains 3 churches, Baptist, F. W. Baptist and Methodist, a good Union school, Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges, and a weekly newspaper, the Record.
Lumber, shingles, lath and staves form the principal shipments.

A postoffice in Flowerfield township, St. Joseph county. It is on the Rocky river, 16 iniles northwest of Centreville, the county seat, 5 east of Marcellus on the C. & L. H. R. HOWELL.
An attractive village of nearly 3000 in" habitants is the county seat of Livingston county. It is centrally located in Howell township, on the line of the D. L. & N. rail- road, 32 miles southeast of Lansing, about the same distance northeast of Jackson and 52 miles northwest of Detroit. Wheat is the great staple agricultural product of this sec-
tion, as high as 40 bushels to the acre being grown in good seasons. Very good water power is obtained at a point about one mile north of the village, where flouring and saw mills are located.
The leading manufacturing interests of Howell are a foundry, machine shop and agricultural implement factory, a sash door and blind factory, and two steam flouring mills. The public buildings embrace the county buildings, which are good and substantial, 3 churches, Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian, and a Union school build- ing erected at a cost of $32,000. Among the recent improvements are a fine new brick block of which the National hotel is a part and a neat new engine house. There are organizations of Masons, Odd Fellows and Grangers, all of which are in a prosperous condition. The press is represented by the

HUBBARDSTON.
An enterprising village of 700 people in North Plains township, in the northeastern corner of Ionia county, 17 miles from Ionia, 7 north of Pewamo, on the D & M R R and 120 from Detroit. It is on the line of the projected Coldwater, Marshall & Mackinac railroad. Water power is derived from Fish creek a tributary of Maple river. Good farming lands surround the village, wheat, corn, oats and hay being staple crops. There are 2 saw mills, I grist mill, I tarning fac- tory, I sash and door factory, I table slide factory, 3 churches, Catholic, Congregation- alist and Methodist, and a graded school building. Flour, lumber, broom and shovel handles are exported. The place was settled about 1860, and incorporated 186S. It is on the stage route from Pewamo to Carson City, and has a daily mail. J. R.
