YPSILANTI.
Lies on the Huron river and the M. C. R. R., 30 miles west of Detroit. It is in the township of Ypsilanti, in the eastern part of Washtenaw county, S miles east of Ann Ar- bor, the county seat. The D. H. & S. W. R. R. here diverges from the Michigan Cen- tral, connecting it with Hillsdale, Logans. port and Indianapolis.
At an early day the present site of Ypsi- lanti was a popular trading ground with the Indians, and in ISHI a firm of French fur traders procured a grant of 2.500 acres at this point from the general government. It was 1523 before a road was cut through from Detroit to the location, and before any
regular settlement was made. It was then called Woodruff's Grove. Two years later parties in Detroit bought out the interests here, and platting the village, named it in honor of the then famous Greek revolution- ary leader, Ypsilanti. It was chartered as a village in 1832. In 1838 the Michigan Cen- tral was opened to it. In 1849 Ypsilanti secured the location there of the State Nor- mal School, the consideration being the site and $13,500 in money. The city has since enjoyed a steady, healthy growth. The pop- ulation is now claimed to be over 6,000.
Ypsilanti possesses a fine water power and this has given it great advantages for the manufacture of paper, a branch in which, it is stated, it is surpassed by but one or two other places in the entire country. There are three paper mills, having a united capacity of 15 tons per day. There is also a machine shop for the manufacture of pa- per mill machinery, several flour mills, a wool- en factory, 3 sash, door and blind factories, an extensive carriage factory and a number of smaller manufacturing interests.
There is a national bank, capital $75,000, one private bank of large means, and 2 newspapers-the Commercial republican, and the Sentinel democratic. Besides the Nor- mal School, Ypsilanti has a large union school and S churches, distributed among the Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian and Episcopal denominations. The city is lighted with gas and water works are talked of. In the distant future Ypsi- lanti looks forward to becoming the county seat of a new county to be carved out of the eastern tier of townships of Washtenaw and a considerable slice of Wayne county.
