A small place in Cass county, 332 miles north of Cassopolis. The postoffice here has been discontinued.
JENISONVILLE.
A place of 200 population, on Grand river, about 7 miles below Grand Rapids. It is also a station on the Grand Rapids branch of the C. & M. L. S. R. R., 18 miles northeast of Holland. It is in Georgetown township, Ottawa county, 30 miles southeast of Grand Haven. It has I saw mill, I grist mill, 2 hotels and a Dutch Reform church. Lumber, heading and flour are shipped. O. S. A station on the M. L. S. R. R., 7 miles south of Grand Haven. It is in Grand Haven township, Ottawa county, and is a Hollan- der settlement.
JONES.
A station on the M. C. R. R. Air line, 7S iniles west of Jackson, and II east of Casso. polis. It is in Newburgh township, Cass county. The postoffice is known as New- burgh. (See Verburgh).
JONESVILLE.
A pleasant incorporated village of 18co inhabitants, is situated at the point at which the Lansing branch of the L. S. & M. S. Ry diverges from the main line, also at the cross- ing of the Ft. W. J. & S. R. R., 5 miles west of Hillsdale, 95 from Detroit, 71 from Toledo, and 25 southwest of Jackson. It is in Fayette township, Hillsdale county, in an excellent farming section of country, and is a thriving business place. The St. Joseph river furnishes ample water power, and flour, sash, doors, carriages, castings, etc., arc among the principal manufactures. The public buildings consist of a public hall, a substantial Union school building, and 4 churches, Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian. A good weekly newspaper, the Independent, is supported. Jonesville was settled about 1832 or IS33, and at an early day was the county seat of Hillsdale county. JOYFIELD.
A postoffice in the southern part of Ben- zie county, in Joyfield township, 10 miles due south of Benzonia, the county seat, 15 southeast of Frankfort, and 34 southwest of Traverse City. It is within the limits of the fruit belt, and produces good crops of wheat, corn, rye and potatoes. It has mail 4 times a week. Amaziah Joy, postmaster and pas- tor of Baptist church.
KALAMAZOO.
The county seat of Kalamazoo county, and the largest incorporated village in the United States is a flourishing place of 12,300 inhab- itants. It is beautifully situated on the Kal- amazoo river and as a railroad center, it is surpassed in the State only by Detroit and Grand Rapids. The various lines centering here or passing through the village, are the M CR R main line, the Grand Rapids & Indiana, the South Haven division of the M1 CR R and the Kalamazoo division of the LS & M'S Ry. It is 39 miles east of South Haven, 35 north of Sturgis, 37 north of White Pigeon, 48 south of Grand Rapids, 144 west of Detroit and 140 east of Chicago.
Among the prominent institutions located here are the Michigan State Insane Asylum, which now maintains 640 inmates at a cost to the State of $153.600, the Kalamazoo col- lege a Baptist educational institution, the Michigan Female Seminary an institution under Presbyterian auspices and the Kalama. 200 Business College, Telegraph and Writing Institute, a popular and highly successful in- stitution, under the management of W F' Parsons.
Kalamazoo has 3 public libraries, the public library proper with over 4000 volumes, the Ladies' library with nearly 3000 volumes and the Young Men's library with nearly 2000 volumes, in addition to these is the College library with 3050 volumes. In addition to the educational institutions above named, the place has I High and 5 ward schools. There are 13 churches; almost every denomination common to the State being represented.
The principal manufacturing enter- prises are 5 flouring mills. 1 large paper mill, 3 foundries and machine shops, 2 agricultural implement works, 2 wooden ware factories, 3 planing mills, I billiard table leg manufactory, I steel spring works and the Fogle Portland cement works, a new enter. prise.
There are 3 banks, the First National, capital $100,000; the Michigan National, capital $100,000; and the Kalamazoo City bank, capital $60,000. There are 2 news- papers published bere, the Telegraph, daily republican and the Gazette, weekly democrat. The Michigan Free Mason, a masonic month- ly is also published.
Kalamazoo is the market and center of supplies for a wealthy agricultural region and noted for the beauty of its broad, finely shaded streets, for its substantial stores and elegant private residences.
