A thriving little village on the St. Joseph river, in the township of Tekonsha, Calhoun county, 13 miles due south of Marshall, the county seat. It lies on the Air line of the M. C. R. R., 33 miles west of Jackson, 10 west of Homer and IOS from Detroit. Te- konsha was settled in 1833 and hasa popula- tion of 600. It contains Aouring. saw, planing, stave and heading mills. Presbyte- rian, Baptist and Methodist churches, a graded school and a good representation of stores and mechanics' shops. It is on the line of the proposed Mansfield, Coldwater and Mackinaw railroad. THREE RIVERS.


The leading town in St. Joseph county, is a flourishing incorporated village of 4,000 inhabitants. It is located at the junction of


the Portage, Rocky and St. Joseph rivers, hence the name. By improvements these streams have been made to afford one of the best water powers to be found in the coun- try


The town is located at the intersection of the Kalamazoo division of the L. S, & M. S. Ry. and the M. C. R. R. Air line, 12 miles north of White Pigeon and 25 south of Kala- mazoo, 145 miles from Detroit and 127 from Chicago.


The principal manufacturing enterprises are 3 flouring mills, 2 foundries and machine shops, I pump factory. I saw mill, I sash and blind factory, I straw pulp mill, I paper mill, I plow factory, I soap factory, etc.


Flour, peppermint oil, fruits, pumps, farm implements, inill machinery, etc., are ship- ped.


Here, as in nearly every portion of south- western Michigan, the quality of the soil is unsurpassed.


Three Rivers also has its mineral springs, said to possess medicinal properties calcu- lated to restore the victims of rheumatism and dyspepsia to health again


The public buildings consist of I good Union and 2 ward school buildings, giving employment to some 16 or IS teachers, and 7 churches-Presbyterian, Episcopal, Method- ist Episcopal, Lutheran, Baptist, Protestant Methodist and Reformed-several of which are very fine edifices. TOMPKINS.


A postoffice and settlement of about 100 people, in Tompkins township, Jackson county, on Grand river, 12 miles northwest of Jackson, and 3 west of Rives Junction, on the Saginaw division of the M. C. R. R. It is situated in a good farming region, has grist and saw mills, and ships grain, hay, potatoes, etc. It has a semi-weekly mail. Robert Cox, postmaster.

TORCH LAKE.


The village of Torch Lake is located on the narrow body of land that lies between Torch lake and Grand Traverse bay, about 215 miles below the head of the former. It is in the township of Torch Lake, Antiim county, 15 miles north of Elk Rapids, the


county seat. Traverse City 25 miles south- west is its usual railroad point. It was settled in 1865 ; has a population of about Io0, a hardwood saw mill, a store and a hotel. Torch lake is a beautiful body of water, 18 miles long and varying in breadth from 2 to 3 miles, and fully rivalling the renowned lake George in the crystal purity of its waters, and the picturesque beauty of its lofty and deeply wooded shores.
