Situated on the south shore of the island of Mackinac, in the straits of the same name. is a village of 800 inhabitants, and the coun- ty seat of Mackinac county. It is IS miles northwest of Cheboygan, 350 from Detroit by water, and 400 from Chicago. Petoskey, 50 miles southwest is the nearest. railroad point. The island is hilly and rocky, and for the most part covered with second growth timber. The village consists mainly of a single street running along the shore with a steep hill rising abruptly in the rear sur- mounted by the old fort still garrisoned by a company of United States troops. Fish and Indian goods are the principal shipments. The island is rapidly growing in popularity as a place of summer resort. Among the more prominent of the natural curiosities of the place is arch rock which rises to the heighth of 140 feet in the arch. Other ob- jects of interest are sugar loaf rock, rising abruptly out of the plain 100 feet, lovers leap, devil's kitchen, chimney rock, Robin- son's folly and giants' stairway, all worthy of the attention of the tourist. There are several good hotels in the village which are, during a part of the year, thronged with guests. The walks and drives about the island are very romantic and the air pure, bracing and healthful. The town has a Ro-
man Catholic church and Methodist and Presbyterian missions, a Union school build- ing and a dozen or more stores. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, St. Joseph and McClure's. A daily boat runs to Petoskey and a mail is received daily. James Lasley, postmaster.

MACKINAW CITY.
Is located on the most northern point of the lower peninsula of Michigan. It is in the township of Beaugrand, Cheboygan county, 17 miles northwest of Cheboygan, 30 miles northeast of Petoskey, the nearest railroad point, and by water 300 from De- troit. A city was laid out here on a large scale some years ago by one Edward Conk- ling, of Cincinnati, but the enterprise was premature, and up to this time but little de- velopment has taken place. There can be no doubt, however, that sooner or later this will be the focal point for the railroad lines reaching out toward the upper peninsula, and where the straits of Mackinaw will one day be bridged, tunneled or ferried. The present population of the place numbers about 100. It has an office of the Western Union telegraph and a stage line to Cheboy- gan weekly, carrying mails. Fish is the only export. Lewis I.
