SHERMAN.
The county seat of Wexford county, is a thriving village of 400 inhabitants, on the Manistee river, 16 miles due west from Man- ton, on the G. R. & I. R. R., its nearest rail- way station. It has 2 churches, Methodist and Congregational, and a weekly news. paper, the Pioneer. About two-thirds of the surrounding country is wood land ; the re- mainder farm lands. The agricultural pro- ductions are grain and vegetables. Manu- factures lumber and four. Sherman has stage communication with Manton, Traverse City, 24 miles north, and Manistee, 67 miles west. A village of 150 inhabitants in Coldwater and Sherman townships, Isabella county, 25 miles northwest of Mt. Pleasant, the county seat. It is on the Chippewa river. Far- well, on the F. & P. M. Ry., 16 miles north- west, is the nearest railway station, to which it has a semi-weekly stage line. The coun- try is devoted to both farming and lumber- ing. It has a tri-weekly mail. A. S. SOUTH HAVEN.
South Haven is an important village on the shore of lake Michigan at the mouth of Black river, in South Haven township, Van Buren county. The mouth of the river affords an excellent harbor for shipping. South Haven is the western terminus of the S. Il. division of the M. C. R. R., it being 39 miles west of Kalamazoo, 183 from De- troit, and is So by water northeast from Chi- cago. It has a population of about 2,000. SOUTH JACKSON.
A country postoffice in Summit township, Jackson county, 7 miles south of Jackson. Its nearest railway station is Baldwin, on the Ft. W. J. & S. R. R. This place has a semi- weekly mail.
SOUTH LYON.
A prosperous village of about 400 inhabi- tants, in Lyon township, Oakland county, 26 miles southwest of Pontiac, the county seat. It is a station on the D. L. & N. R. R., 33
miles west of Detroit, and 51 east of Lan- sing. The locality was settled in 1832, and the village incorporated in 1872. The neighboring country is well settled, and a flourishing trade is supported. Wheat, ap- ples, beans, potatoes and pork form the bulk of the shipments. The churches are Pres- byterian, Methodist, Episcopal and Free Methodist. Lumber only is manufactured. Telegraph, R. R. line.
