A village of 100 inhabitants, in the town. ship of Wright, Hillsdale county, 23 miles southeast of Hillsdale and 7 northwest of Fayette, its nearest railroad point, on the C. & C. S. Ry. Grain, grass seed and potatoes are the most important productions shipped. Mail twice a week.

It is in a timbered country. The productions are wheat, corn, oats and potatoes. Lumber and flour are manufact- ured and lumber, logs and cordwood with farm produce are shipped. It is on the stage route from Elk Rapids via Mancelona to Ot.

SPRING LAKE.
Spring Lake is a flourishing incorporated. village of 1,600 inhabitants, in the township of the same name, Ottawa county, on the point of land lying between Spring lake and Grand river. The D. & M. R. R. passes through it, by which it is 2 miles west to Grand Haven, 29 east to Grand Rapids, and 187 miles to Detroit. The country around is well adapted to fruit raising, and apples, peaches, pears, small fruits and lum- ber constitute the bulk of shipments. The village contains 4 saw mills, 2 planing mills, an Alden fruit preserving establishment, a mineral spring, a weekly newspaper, the Independent, etc. The churches are 5- Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Dutch Re- formed, and Presbyterian. STANDISH.
A small village but a place of considerable commercial importance as the point of di- vergence from the railroad of all the travel and overland traffic of the lake shore counties north of Saginaw bay-Iosco, Alcona, Al- pena and Presque Isle. It is on the Macki- naw division of the M. C. R. R., 28 miles north of Bay City, and on the middle branch of Pine river, 5 miles back from the shore of Saginaw bay. Population 300. It has Congregationalist, Catholic, and Methodist churches and a Union school. Lumber, shingles, hoops and telegraph poles are shipped. A daily stage leaves here for Tawas and Alpena 6 times a week. STANTON.
The county seat of Montcalm county. Is. a flourishing incorporated village of 2,000 inhabitants and the northern terminus of the Stanton branch of the D. L. & N. R. R. It is 24 miles north of Ionia, 62 northwest of Lansing and 147 from Detroit. The country surrounding Stanton is heavily tim- bered with pine, and lumber manufacturing is the chief interest of the place. There are in the village proper 4 shingle mills, 3 planing mills, 2 flouring mills, I saw mill and a foundry and machine shop. Besides these there are about 20 saw and shingle mills within a radius of 7 miles, all of which make Stanton their headquarters and ship- ping point. The place also contains 3 churches, Methodist, Baptist and Congrega- tional, a bank, a weekly newspaper, the Her- ald, a good Union school building, etc. Settled, January, 1862. Incorporated, 1869. A postoffice of Hamilton township, Gratiot county, lying II miles southeast of Ithaca, and 18 northeast of St. Johns, whence it has a weekly mail. Wm. L. Ball, postmaster.
STEPHENS.
A village of some 300 inhabitants on Fish lake, a small body of water in the township of Mayfield, Lapeer county. It is a station on the Fish lake branch of the Bay City di- vision of the M. C. R. R., 5 miles northeast of Lapeer and 65 north of Detroit. Lumber, staves and shingles are largely manufactured in the village and neighboring country, and lumber, timber, shingles, heading and staves with some grain are the principal shipments from the place.
