LAPEER.


Is situated at the intersection of the C. & L. H. and the Bay City division of the M.C. railroads, 20 miles east of Flint, 45 west of Port Huron, 48 southeast of Bay City and 60 . above Detroit. It is a thriving incorpora- ted city of some 3,500 inhabitants and is the seat of justice for Lapeer county. The site of the village was taken up by A. N. Hart, in 1831, and the village platted by him in IS33. In 1836 the county was organized, and Lapeer became the county seat. In 1860 it received a village charter, and in 1868 became a city. In 1871 it secured a railway outlet via Port Huron, and in 1872 was tapped by the D. & B. C. R. R. now the B. C. division of the M. C. R. R., a branch of which, 5 miles long, here diverges to Fish Lake. It derives water power from the Flint river and has among its manufacturing enterprises 3 planing mills, 2 flouring mills, a chair factory, a woolen mill, 2 machine shops, 2 wagon shops and some others. Lumber, shingles, staves, sash, doors and farm produce are shipped. Lake Neppesing, a beautiful and popular summer resort, lies 4 miles southwest. Lapeer has two weekly newspapers, the Clarion, republican, and the Democrat. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union. Mail daily. Shad N. Vin- cent, postmaster.

LA SALLE.


A postoffice and cross-roads in the town- ship of LaSalle, Monroe county, 5 miles south of Monroe. It is a station on the C. S. and the L. S. & M. S. railways, and is an old settlement, but, for some reason, has not kept pace with its more prosperous neighbors. Population about 50. There are 2 churches in the place, and 2 sawmills on Otter creek, within a mile of it. Grain and lumber are shipped from the station. Mail daily. James Reynolds, postmaster.

LATHROP.


A postoffice and place of 100 people, also known as Centreville, located on the Penin- sula division of the C. & N. W. R'y., 30 miles north of Escanaba and 32 south of Negaunee. It is in Maple Ridge township, Delta county. The country, much of which is swampy, is heavily timbered. Wood, charcoal, hay and potatoes are the principal shipments. Settlement formed, 1865. Mail, daily. Azel Lathrop, postmaster.


LAWRENCE.


A lively village of Van Buren county, situated in the township of the same name, on the Paw Paw river, 9 miles due west of the village of Paw Paw and 6 east of Hart- ford, which is its nearest railway station and to which it has a daily stage line. It was first settled in 1837, incorporated as a village in 1869, and now numbers about 800 inhab- itants. It has 2 saw mills, 1 grist mill, a foundry, a cider mill, 4 churches and a good brick Union school building. Lawrence is surrounded by a splendid farming and fruit country, and is the collecting point for large amounts of wheat, wool, lumber, hides, apples and peaches. It has stages to Hart- ford, Paw Paw and Decatur daily, and a daily mail. G. A. Cross, postmaster.

LAWTON.


A flourishing village of 1,000 inhabitants, in Antwerp township, Van Buren county. It lies on the M. C. R. R., at the junction of the Paw Paw branch, 4 miles southeast of Paw Paw, 16 west of Kalamazoo, 160 west of Detroit and 124 from Chicago. The vil- lage was first settled in IS4S and incorpora- ted in 1859. It is situated in a section em- bracing oak openings and black ash swamp lands, of which grain, fruit and live stock are the staples. The blast furnace of the Michigan Central Iron Co is the leading business interest. It has a capital of $250,- oco, and produces about 20 tons of pig iron a day. The ore is brought by water from lake Superior to New Buffalo, thence by rail to Lawton. The other manufacturing interests include machine shops, a fanning mill manufactory, 2 carriage shops, a saw mill and a cider manufactory. There are 2 flouring mills in the neighborhood. It has 2 churches, Baptist and Methodist, and a good Union school. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American. A stage com- municates with Paw Paw 4 times a day. Mail daily. William H. LELAND.


This village lies on the shore of lake Michigan, directly opposite the North Mani- iou island. It is situated on a level plat of land lying between two high hills on the north and south, and extending back to Carp lake. Carp river, the outlet of this lake, runs through the village, giving it a water communication back into the interior some 15 miles. Leland is a fine place of summer resort, the scenery being beautiful and diver- sified, the atmosphere pure and heathful, and the fishing not to be excelled. The popula- tion of the village is 434. It contains three churches-Catholic, Lutheran and Congre- gational-two sawmills and a blast furnace, the iron ore for which is brought across the lake from Escanaba. The furnace was the property of the late Capt. E. B. Ward, of Detroit. Leland is II miles southwest of Northport, the county seat, and 30 northwest of Traverse City, its nearest railway station. It was settled in 1854. A tri-weekly stage- line runs to Sutton's Bay, Traverse City and Glen Arbor. Mail, tri-weekly. Ellis A. Doty, postmaster.

A small village in Lenox township, Ma- comb county, better known as Ridgeway sts- tion on the G. T. Ry., 40 miles northeast of Detroit, 16 above Mt. Clemens, 17 south of Port Huron, and 17 west of St. Clair. It is the junction of three railroads -- the G. T., the Midland, Michigan & Canada Southern. and the St. Clair & Chicago Air line.
