Five of the seven railroads entering Jackson center at one Union depot, the largest and finest in the State, and the various directions in which they leave and approach the city renders it possible for merchants and others who live within a hundred miles to visit the city, trans- act their business and return the same day. Its ample railroad facilities and extensive coal mines afford it good advantages as a manufacturing center and its business inter- ests are among the heaviest in the state.

Owing to its central position the original State and Territorial roads were laid out through the village of Jacksonburg, and several of the most important highways of the State were started from, and ran to this point. Jackson county is also the source of most of the principal water courses of the State. The Kalamazoo, the Khiisin, the Portage and the Grand rivers, all rise within
