A postoffice and place of 30 inhabitants, known as Michie, in Fraser township, Bay county, 15 miles above Bay City, the county seat. It is on the Mackinaw division of the M. C. R. R., and is on the time cards of the road as State Road crossing. It is the loca- tion of a shingle mill. Shingles, hoops, staves, fish, charcoal and tan bark are shipped from the vicinity. A village in Fremont township, in the southern part of Tuscola county. It is 13 miles south of Caro, the county seat, and 12 southeast of Vassar, on the Bay City division of the M. C. R. R. The surrounding coun. try is unsurpassed for forming purposes and grain, hay and fruits are grown in abundance. It has grist, saw, planing and shingle mills, a Methodist church and several stores and artisans' shops. Grain, wool, flour, lumber and shingles are shipped. The surrounding country is unsurpassed for fertility, and grain, hay and fruit are staple products. Its interests are a grist mill, a saw mill and planing mill.

The village of Mayfield is a station on the Traverse City branch of the G. R. & I. R. R. 27 miles from Walton, the junction with the main line, and 14 miles from Traverse City. MEAD'S MILLS.
The postoffice at a village of 200 inhab- itants, on the F. & P. M. Ry. known as Waterford. It is in Plymouth township, Wayne county, 24 miles west of Detroit and 9 north of Wayne. The river Rouge fur- nishes superior water power, it having a fall of 23 feet here. MEADVILLE.

MEARS.
A village in Golden township, Oceana county. It is a station on the C. & M. I. S. R. R., 163 miles above New Buffalo, and 7 south of Pentwater. A large lumber interest centers here, and considerable trade of all kinds. Population 100 and increasing rapidly. The village was platted in 1872, but not much attention was given to its development by the proprietor, Hon. Charles Mears, until the fall of 1874, when he made the village his headquarters and commenced a series of improvements, which, if carried out, will make Mears the village of Oceana county. There are already located here 3 saw mills, a shingle mill, a bowl factory, a broom handle factory and clapboard mill. Peaches, lumber, shingles, bowls, wheat and potatoes are shipped. MEDINA.
A village settled in. 1$34 and located in the township of Medina, Lenawee county, 17 miles southeast of Adrian, the county seat, 5 south of Clayton, on the L. S. & M. S. R. R., with which it has daily stage com- munication. It is on the Tiffin river, in a good farming and hardwood timber country. Among the improvements are 2 saw mills, I flouring mill, a cheese factory, 2 churches, Methodist and Baptist, an academy and a free school. Flour, lumber, butter and cheese are shipped. MEMPHIS.
An incorporated village of about Soo in- habitants, on the line between St. Clair and Macomb counties, 22 miles southwest of Port Huron, 23 northeast of Mt. Clemens and 43 from Detroit. It is 7 miles north of Ridgeway Station, on the G. T. Ry. Belle river flows through the village, and is made available for water power purposes. Two foundries and machine shops, I saw mill, I flouring mill, I cheese factory, 3 churches, Adventist, Congregationalist and Methodist, and a graded public school are among the interests of the village. MENDON.
A village of about Soo inhabitants, in the . township of Mendon, St. Joseph county. It is on the G. R. & I. R. R., 7 miles above the crossing of the M. C. R. R. Air line, and 21 south of Kalamazoo. The St. Joseph river flows through the village but the water power is not improved. It is surrounded by a fine prairie and oak opening country. The village contains Methodist, Baptist, Episco- pal, Christian and Catholic churches, a good Union school, a weekly newspaper -- The Mendon Times, a private bank, a large brick hotel, the Wakeman House, a flouring mill, a foundry, a stave factory, a bending factory etc. Express, United States. MENOMINEE.
A prosperous village of 3000 inhabitants, is the county seat of Menominee county. It is located on the west shore of Green bay, at the mouth of the Menominee river, in the extreme lower end of the county, and is a station on the C. & N. W. Ry., by which it is 50 miles north of Green Bay, Wis., 63 south of Escanaba and 264 from Chicago.

Menominee is an important lumber manufac- turing point, having in the immediate neigh- borhood 6 large saw mills with a yearly capacity of 75,000,000 feet of lumber. A blast furnace in full operation turns out 8,000 tons of pig iron per annum, extensive beds of iron ore are being developed in the county, several companies having organized and located mines at Little Sturgeon falls, Breen- Ingalls and other points. There are 1 churches, Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist, good schools, 2 newspapers, the Herald and the Journal, I planing mill and I brewery. During 1874 a $34,000 court house was built, also a handsome brick town hall costing $8,000. The general government has ex- pended $100,000 on harbor improvements here during the past few years. The village has a well organized fire department equipped with 1 steam and 2 hand engines. MERIDIAN.
A place of about 200 inhabitants, in Meri- dian township, Ingham county on Grand river, 10 miles east of Lansing. It is also on the D. L. & N. R. R., 75 miles west of Detroit. It is surrounded by valuable farm - ing lands, and contains a saw mill and a rake factory. Settled, 1825. [. F. Carr, post- master.

A postoffice and station on the Bay-City division of the M. C. R. R., in the township of Metamora, Lapeer county, 9 miles south of Lapeer, the county seat, and 52 above Detroit. The surrounding country, which is rolling, is rich and productive, wheat, bar- ley, oats, hay and corn being staple pro- ducts. Stage communication is had with Almont and Hadley daily. Settled, 1836. A station on the Mackinaw division of the M. C. R. R., in Fraser township, Bay county.

MICHIGAMME.
A village on the M. H. & O. R. R., in the township of Ely, Marquette county, 38 miles west of Marquette and 26 east of L'Anse. It is at the western edge of Mich- igamme lake, and in the vicinity of the Michigamme iron range, which apparently begins near the head of the lake and extends west some 8 miles. There are several mines located along this range. only two of which, however, have attained to any im- portance, -- the Michigamme and the Spur Mountain. The former at present employs 400 men, and turned out, in 1876, in round figures, 75,cco tons of ore, The other in- terests here are a steam saw mill, a Catholic church, and a graded school. It was settled in 1872 and is incorporated as the Michigamme Company. Population about 1.500. Ex- press, American. Telegraph, Northwest- ern. Mail daily. John C. Fowle, post- master.
